They did great last season under a manager who asked for a big effort from his players and got it. I just cant see that being repeated there this season.

Agree Alf. CH was in a mess middle of last season and he turned to trusted senior figures he could rely on to get us out of it, hardly a surprise.
I share some of the frustrations expressed by others but want to give him the whole of this season come what may, think he may pleasantly surprise some of us.

He's never finished outside of the top 4 in a full season.

You have to respect that it's a very impressive fact.

Yes it is impressive, but whatever you do, do not use facts because they are totally meaningless to Hughton's detractors.

Hughton will forever be a boring, defence minded manager in some peoples eyes regardless of the facts.

Facts like his Newcastle team bored the pants off of the St James Park faithful by scoring 90 goals and winning 30 matches on their way to winning the League with 102 points in the 2009 10 season

Or the fact that his Birmingham side finished fourth top scorers with 78 goals when finishing 4th in 2011 12, presumably they spent the whole season boring the opposition into submission.

I suppose you could aim criticism at him for producing a Norwich side which scored a paltry 41 goals during the 2012 13 PL season, but they did manage to finish 11th, which just happens to be the highest position Norwich have finished since the 1992 93 season.

It is perfectly true that they were heading for relegation the following season, a feat so ably managed by all of the other managers they have employed since.

At Brighton he spent his first six months attempting to avoid relegation, which he accomplished, and then turned them into a top three side who just happened to be the top scorers that season with 72 goals - BORING!

Having failed in the play offs, he managed to go one better by getting automatic promotion the following season, scoring 74 goals in the process, which was only the fifth best in the division.

His two years in the PL with Brighton did not go particularly well with 15th and 17th position finishes respectively, which was incredibly poor when you compare that with his modern thinking, total footballing successor who managed to eke out 15th and 16th position finishes with his new shiny philosophy.

After last seasons catastrophe the very least Hughton deserves is a chance with his own players; once he gets those players I am certain we will see a shift in emphasis in the way we play.

Excellent post, the CH out group will have stopped reading after the second line sadly.

I do think we'll struggle to repeat those goal scoring exploits unless we manage to sign a striker upgrade. 

Sadly they will also say he's rubbish unless we miraculously repeat the above heroics.

It might be too much of an ask, but someone might have time on their hands....how spread around were the goals in those teams that did well? Was it from a number of wingers/attackers or mainly from 1 or 2 top players? I don't think we have a top top goal scorer unless Grabs can find his form again and we learn to feed him properly.

Exactly.  You have to play the cards you're dealt. Some want to pin Forest's failure last year on Hughton. The LATE pre-season. The mediocre recruitment last Summer. The poor start to the season. The lack of squad fitness. The lack of strikers. The lack of goals. The poor service. The lack of availability of Worrall or Grabban. The loss of form of Lolley. The lack of young players (he's a manager that doesn't play young players. But had played Mighten, Yates and others. And has played all the returning young loan players...this pre-season. Notably Mighten and Brennan who have both scored boring goals. The 1st pre-season he's had. And the 1st Summer recruitment he's had. He's jettisoned all the journey man players. 14 of them. They weren't his. And the ones he brought in temporarily? Only Garner is the one he's probably after. A young player he brought in January.)

A win rate of just 28% backs that up. We need to get a new guy in before the season slips away. Plenty of good managers out there

But reading the chairmans programme notes yesterday, I doubt they are even considering sacking him, as it would look rather silly after such a glowing backing.
