I really have only two issues with Yates and both will come with good coaching and hard work. That is one his heading when attacking and the other is his positioning when we don’t have ball. Could save himself a lot of effort in recovery runs if he learns to read the game better and get himself in the correct starting position. Other than that he is a perfectly reasonable all rounded player.

Some interesting Yates vs Garner stats. Yates has better defensive stats than Garner in addition to a higher expected goal ratio but maybe a bit more of a surprise, he also outshines Garner in these areas:
- Progressive runs
- Forward passes
- Successful forward passes
- Progressive passes

Players like Yates will always get dug out by fans when the team can’t create and score.

Because his isn’t that type of player he gets criticised for not being what the team is missing.

You put creative players and pace around him and he will do a really good job

It says that in that report put on another thread Ozzy, and I agree, I think he would make a very good Centre Half. It would eliminate his game from many of the criticisms aimed at him as a DM

Yep pretty much what I said above too. When watching on streams I kept seeing him actively getting in the way. Feels like something that would be fixable though.

I'm all for people having different opinions and all of that but when facts are ignored and arguments like "he only passes sideways or backwards" or "he gives away needless free kicks" are used then it's getting kind of boring for me. So please back your arguments up with some facts and let's have a proper discussion.

How about he simply isn't good enough.

It’s certainly not a case of him being dug out when the team can’t create and score, that isn’t his job. He just doesn’t do the basics right like pass to a team mates feet consistently which at nearly 24 years of age you’d thought he’d be able to do by now…..We’re not asking for Glenn Hoddle or David Beckham long range style passes here just the sodding basics!!

I’m sure some fans would rather keep Yates in the starting 11 even if we signed a far supreme alternative who’s within our price range etc, just because it’s Ryan Bloody Yates.

Yates job is mostly about breaking up the flow of the game, shielding the defence, to commit fouls for the sake of his team, covering defenders who get caught out of position, to break up attacks and then give the ball to another midfielder.

Yates job is not the most attractive roll in the team and because of that he can go unnoticed but there is a reason why we didn't concede many goals last season and one of those reasons was Ryan Yates.

We didn't score many goals either but that was nothing to do with Ryan Yates.

The point I am trying to get across here is that when judging Yates we need to focus on the job that he is employed to do in the team not the job that some want him to do because that is somebody else's job.

Player C - 83.19% pass completion rate, 67.23% forward pass completion rate

Might be a surprise which one is which out of Garner, Yates and Cafu.
