First half was dire tactically with our main intent to create enforced errors from the long diagonal and win the second ball, all but once QPR had possession of the ball within seconds of it being played long.
The only time it was successful being Da Costa playing it out to Lolley on the right who won a corner.
Our greatest threat came from our width and we didn’t use it enough until we went behind.
Yates and Colback are too similar and neither got high enough up the pitch to influence the game, was that intentional to reduce the space between players to attempt to turn over play? It certainly seemed that way but never looked like working.
I don’t think we’ve played this direct since Cotterill (pre SOD).

Playing long balls early from the back might be a tactic to overcome teams playing an high press against and utilise Da Costa's pace. We are also missing Watson and his ability to pick the ball up deep and start attacks. I think we still need a playmaker to play next to Collback. I like Ryan Yates but he cannot play on the half turn. We do need some fine tuning.

QPR didn’t play high press first half

I have noticed that most sides will now do a high press against us, which means stifling our progression forwards, stopping us from making forward runs or even sideways passes. We are now having to revert to the long punt forward, from our CB's and are effectively bypassing our midfield. We are being forced into making stupid errors along our back line.
I have now had time to calm down a bit and try to make some sense out of what happened today. We do look like we are behind, when it comes to pre-season. Has Sabri misjudged just what was needed? We did play with a number of players who have barely featured over the past 6, 8, 10, 12 months so there is rustiness in some legs and minds. Hopefully, they will sharpen up and give us a much greater attacking threat. But we have got to ditch this defensive let the opposition have the ball and hit them on the break tactic, because we have been found out and it is no longer effective. Even when it was effective, we squandered our chances, two of them less than 10 yards out and a virtual open goal!!!
Sabri has got to start getting ruthless with certain players now. He has the majority of the cover he needs. If they aren't performing, they need to be dropped. I am not just implying the likes of Carvalho or Ribero, but the likes of Figuredo, Worrall, Grabban, Yates, his 'pet players'. He needs to come up with a more attacking dimensional tactic now he has more attack minded players in the squad. There is an old adage in football and that is, the best form of defence is to attack. Sabri needs to learn this and adopt it otherwise it is going to be a long hard season and he will be unemployed before we get to Christmas!
I think the Sabri negative tactics argument is overstated. For the last 25 mins today we were playing 424. I know we were chasing the game. It today turned today on Figs error. Until then we were not great but it was an ok away performance. They had not threatened our goal. Individual error at the back which we didn't make too many of last season and the usual lack of cutting edge in the final third third. Hopefully the new centre back will help with the former and Freeman should give us more quality in the final third. A fit Lolley, Ameobi and Freeman should start to create more chances. Today we did create a few but missed them.
This is the only time Sabri changes his tactics, once we fall behind. If he would, at least, start games with a more attacking intention, then I feel pressure would be taken away from him as it would then show he is not a one trick pony.
We should not have to be facing defeat in the face before deciding to go on the attack. We should be doing that from the start. I don't mean we start with a 4-2-4 formation either, we would lose matches through the midfield if we did that!

In the main Sabri's strategy has worked. We finished in our highest league position for 7 years. I accept to kick on further it needs to develop but give him a chance. At least give the new players time to gel.

If Grabban is not capable of hitting the target on at least 3 occasions when it was easier to hit it than it was to miss it.

No you are right it is not his fault that grabban missed these chances.
It is his fault to continuously apply the same tactics and expect different results each time despite the fact we can all se that it's not working.
It is his fault that he continues to play a striker who is bang out of form, has been for months, when we have options now available.
It is his fault that he made grabban captain when he isn't captain material and we have better options on the pitch.
It is his fault that, when chasing the game he takes off our best and most creative player.
I have mentioned before that he needs to change. He hasn't. You yourself have said that he doesnt need to change. If that is the case we are fooked with this manager. He is no longer taking us forward we are in sharp decline and have been for a long time now.
We have been sussed out and sabri either cant see it or refuses to do anything about it.
I dont like the changing of manager and I see the issues that come with that but christ he needs to go now.

I can't fault what you're saying.
Winning and losing can become a habit.
Sometimes you can be so close to the problem you can't see how to fix it.
The last half a year hasn't been good since January, really.
But I'm prepared to see how the 1st ten games go with the 7 new signings incoming and up to speed to see if 'The Coach's' approach has merit.
2 successive seasons with the same Coach is an opportunity we don't often get.
Still think we need another better winger. And a CM who can put their foot on the ball and pass forward.
We've brought in a talented young CH. But I think the problem with Worrall and Figs is it's either or. A more experienced head in there with the other on the bench. We do have Big Ben. We do have Blackett.

I know what you are saying SA and I get it.
On the other hand in 10 games time we could be so far off promotion that this season could already be lost.
I also agree that we need a winger but even with a top signing, the negative tactics and lack of desire to attack and press teams will mean the same outcome.
Yes we do need signings but we also need the manager to see what he is doing is part of the problem. I would love it if he was the manager at the end of the season. It’s looking very unlikely.
As someone pointed out yesterday it’s only the first game... except it isn’t. This is just another in a long line of very negative, very boring and very concerning performances.

'Negative tactics. Last season we had our highest finish for 7 years. Sabri got the most we could have expected from a limited squad which he inherited after pre- season had started. If we had tried to out football the likes of Leeds Fullham West Brom Brentford Swansea we would of got hammered. We simply weren't good enough to do that. He has now brought some players in of his choosing and we should give them more than one league game and one Carrabo cup game to gel before writing him and them off.

Again. I can't disagree with what you're saying. In truth a pattern emerges much sooner than ten games. Often you get the teams that are going to do well quick out the blocks. Though not always. (Forest in the 'Collymore' promotion season started slowly...)
But to me, the football doesn't inspire confidence. I remember MoN being pilloried for the style of play with no pre-season, no avalanche of players, no two successive pre-seasons and another injection of players. And at least under him I felt the players showed more bottle.
This Coach is getting the time I wish Aitor or MoN would have had. But that's irrelevant now.
What isn't irrelevant?
The style of football seems negative and boring. The Centre Halves seem to have a fault line born of the style of play being asked. Still, that's up to The Coach.
Another 9 games. And he'll have been given 'a chance.'
For his sake, he'd better be top 6.
Starting with a win vs Cardiff. Where we will have to show some bottle.
SA.
