Stevie Cooper
1st question is why has James Nursey got contacts in the dressing room and who is it?

The unsuitable forward options is no surprise to anyone who has watched us.

The Mangala stat is interesting for all those who have been lauding him in his absence. To play in that centre mid position looking neat and tidy on the ball isnt enough, you need to put some tackles in.

Nursey conveniently leaves out the stats from other parts of Mangalas game like how he breaks up play with his excellent positioning and how he takes up positions to receive a pass and then give the ball to a team mate to make sure that we keep possession of the ball but thankfully Steve Cooper will know all about that which is why Mangala will be one of the first names on the team sheet against Leicester if he's fit enough.

Top midfielders intercept, you can win the balls without tackles too.

I think this feels like an intentional leak to me. Trying to get in front of some of the criticism and explain what's going on.

Feels like from this it's clear it'll be a front four of Brennan, Lingard, MGW and Awoniyi in a 4231 next game. Probably an unpopular opinion but I'd pick Lingard above MGW if we're playing 4231 and it's one or the other.

I think Lingard has looked better than MGW who for me has looked nothing more than rubbish so far.

According to stats on Whoscored they are much of a much, Gibbs White ranked 10th of Forest players, Lingard 13th

This particular graphic about our play is particularly damning

I dont think he's looked horrendous but still not great either. I think we need Lingard in the team as he's our established premier league starter. Shod be building the team around him on paper (not that his performances have deserved that)

Hopefully a switch to a 4231 should free up Lingard to play the role he was so good at for West Ham. Feels like he's not had enough shooting chances here yet either

Just a reminder that this is the Steve Cooper thread.

There is a separate thread for formations and tactics etc.

Has got contacts inside the dressing room.
So Coops seemingly telling the players to expect changes, as we look at moving to a 4 at the back, to bolster midfield.

Now boss Cooper has told his squad to expect changes as he experiments in a friendly and considers ditching his three-man central defence. Cooper dropped captain Joe Worrall and new boy Jesse Lingard to the bench against the Cottagers but the Forest boss retains the support of the dressing room as he beds in their new players.

New striker Taiwo Awoniyi was the match-winner on the opening day as Cooper fielded eight new signings , including Jesse Lingard. Awoniyi, signed for £17million from Union Berlin, has since doubled his tally by scoring against Fulham.

But Forest staff are trying to get the powerfully-built frontman to hold the ball up better and use his strength more against defenders.

Lingard, signed on a free from Manchester United, has impressed in training with his skills but Cooper is struggling to fit him and fellow £42million new boy Morgan Gibbs-White into the same team.

Both are extremely talented creative attacking players but neither of them or Brennan Johnson are very good when the opposition have the ball and they are needed to track-back, close down and tackle.

Fellow new £12million Belgium international midfielder Orel Mangala is another star who has impressed with his technical skills and range of passing but only won four tackles in three games prior to getting injured.

It has left Cooper considering switching to a back four to make Forest more solid and compact out of possession after conceding 12 goals in their last three games

Cooper's spending spree has raised eyebrows and made Forest the butt of several jokes on social media where their team bus was mocked up as a double-decker.

But Cooper insists the huge rebuild was essential after losing five players who were on loan last term as well as veteran striker Lewis Grabban.

He said: “There has been a real rationale and necessity. We have had no choice. I don’t mind saying we would have loved to carry on last year with our team and added a few players but it was never going to happen."

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper is planning a behind-closed-doors match on Friday as he tries to figure out his best side.

You missed the top paragraph off, it baffles me how he expects to find his best side out on Friday when most of the team are away on international duty, its clearly to keep the fitness in the players not to find his best side..  although cook Yates and Worrall will be involved so that keeps them up to speed for the Lester game..

Hope coops can turn it around, feels like another hughton situation ( we had a international break, he lost straight after, sacked) hopefully this break coops can crack it

Whatever his longevity here I think it’s unlikely he will just leave for another club.
His options are
Another struggling PL club eg Leicester in which case why?
Move abroad, unlikely
Go back down to the Championship. Again why, big pressure to repeat the miracle

Perfectly possible he could be pushed or simply walk out but Im not buying he is talking to other clubs yet.

He wouldn't still be here if he was.

I thought Cooper ducked and swerved the question with a load of waffle when asked about his contract situation yesterday.

With the contract thing, the only issue with him not signing it is that it allows another club to poach him for cheaper. However, it does make it easier for the club to move on to later in the year if that's what it wants so there are benefits to both parties

Perhaps, whatever he wanted in the contract the club weren't willing to offer so he's betting on himself being successful this year and the club therefore matching that demand later down the line? He wouldn't be the first person to do this in sports.
