Yates is a good championship player that still needs work. Going to do well one day and going to frustrate me the next. Having not actually been his coach i don't know if he has it in him to improve but if one thing I’ve learnt is different coaches can bring out the best in players you didn't think it was possible while others drop down. Having a consistence coach will also help. Can't keep going from one coach wanting him to be a attacking midfielder then a year later to be the deeper midfielder. I cannot stress this enough how important it is for players to become specialists in a position rather than a jack of all trades if the team and that player is going to become something beyond average.
It really is up to him to listen, learn and put the extra hours in to weed out the mistakes that have been amplified due to the team performing poorly.
The next 3 years for him will be the biggest of his career in terms of development and what we can expect from him in the future

The point I am trying to get across here is that when judging Yates we need to focus on the job that he is employed to do in the team not the job that some want him to do because that is somebody else's job.

Agree Sniff, Yates does those tasks well but the states show that he does more than that. He is far better at passing the ball and contributing in the oppositions half than many people give him credit for.

I like Yates, he does so much well, and I can see why he has played so regularly over the past few seasons.
Is pretty obvious that there are some areas to improve. Which player can you not say the same about.
For me if he can get the ball from back 4 and take a touch and turn then we will also be able to build through the middle rather than going side to side. As said above he is often in a position where he cant receive the ball and at times last season even if he was then team mates didnt look to him.
I believe that this could be a big year for Ryan.

Ben Osborne was the same. He was good and covered every blade of grass in a match, but he wasn't a specialist in any real position. He too was often played in a number of positions, including LB. But because he wasnt a specialist in a particular position, he too became the butt of many fans gripes (unwarranted IMO), the same as Ryan gets now (also unwarranted IMO)

He is definitely improving.
His weight of pass and passing forward more is evident.
Physically he is an absolute monster
Just need the right players around him
