Benjamin Brereton
Paul Taylor:

"They want to sign him.

And it feels as though that is increasingly a possibility.

But the way this whole thing has panned out has been a lesson in the art of the use of the media to get things moving...

Told that, when noises were being made about Blackburn having made bids of £5m and £6m over the past two or three weeks, Forest were a little bit baffled, because that hadn’t been the case.

What’s also interesting is that Forest are also understood to have turned down the advances of a Premier League club, in and around deadline day, who were willing to pay up to £10m for the player...

So £5m or £6m was never going to get the deal done...

But if Blackburn are willing to pay up to £14m for the player, that is the kind of figure that is going to get Forest thinking very seriously.

If they do put that kind of money on the table, it has to be something close to the right kind of price for him... particularly if there are some decent sell-ons involved. That will be the key to this deal, if it happens.

As Aitor Karanka has repeatedly said, if a club is willing to pay the right amount of money for Forest and the player himself wants to go, a deal always has the chance of happening.

£5m or £6m was never going to be enough... but if suggestions that Blackburn are ready to up the ante do indeed prove to be true, then it could change the dynamic considerably.

Karanka has been asked, more than once...

... if Forest would work to sign a replacement for Brereton, if he was to leave the club, either on loan or on loan with a view to a permanent move - and he said that they would.

So Forest are not going to let him leave and leave themselves short of attacking options in the process.

That's it then.

£14m for BB, £3m take it or leave it for Oliveira at 1 hour before the end of the transfer window.

£11m for January freshen up.

Surely we need to sign a replacement before we let Ben leave. There is just a week of the window left.

It would be madness to let him go without having signed a replacement first.

I'm sure eveything's being taken care of. Can't imagine with the effort and money that's gone into the squad over the last 12 months that AK would allow himself to be short.

£8m, I'd keep him
£10m, I'd have a think
£12m, that's getting a bit high and I'd probably let him go.
£14m, do you need a lift up there Ben?

That's a good sliding scale you have there.

I'll be disappointed to lose Ben', a player with so much potential and a young England international.  But there always comes down to the greater good of the club for where Forest currently are.  (...and despite Forest signings 23 players in two windows, I'd argue that one of those windows was under duress and the other window was meticulously planned.  So only 'one' window of true preparatory building.  That still leaves up to a handful of positions where Forest aren't building in the same context of Leeds or Boro'.)

But Forest are in the 2nd tier and do they have the time to develop young players?  If somebody offered that for Cash or Worrall...there comes a point where it's pragmatic business sense to do so.  In that, getting to the Premiership is the aim and to do that you need quality, battle hardened pros.

Are Forest going to get promoted with Cash, Bren' and Worrall in the side?  Did they last time around.  Though we have better quality players this time around...they're still very young...and I don't think they're quite battle ready.

£14 million, eh?

Thanks for the info'.

Though, for me, tinged with sadness and regret at not being Ben' flying at his full potential.  Still, we did get a glimpse of that vs Arsenal.  He was terrific that day.

With our current leadership, I'm fairly confident they are 'planned' for that eventuality...for any player leaving, in fact.  I don't believe they'd let Ben' go unless they had a replacement lined up.

Forest 'appear' to have an embarrassment of riches at DCM.  But the games against Reading and Wigan tell a different story.  Not sure we have the final solution in that dept.

I think Forest need do need a quality defensive midfielder who can really boss a game and who is in his prime.  Forest have been linked with one from Wolves?

Perhaps.  Fair enough.  Norwich have a player who isn't happy there, it seems.  That provides an opportunity for Forest if they take it.

...and there's the rumours of Saiss from Wolves.

January freshen up?  I think there'll be more to come in January.

I think the moment we had that 'open letter' from Randall, that the club are about putting the present and future needs of the club first.  That does mean balancing the books and it does mean if a player's value is met, they'll be sold accordingly if it is right for the player, club and the buying club are willing to buy.

But I do believe that it will be pragmatic.  Balancing the books maybe.  (Do we know if Forest are in debt because of the investment?  Do they have to recoup?)  And I'm sure, giving the stated intention to get promoted, that a good tilt at investing any player money of e.g. £14 million will be invested to a degree to make that objective happen.

Eg.  Forest don't have a lot of quality depth of proven strikers.  They haven't got anybody in-between the age of eg. 20-29.  They have two strikers over 30 and one under 20.

They have other areas such as DCM, left wing and ACM where I'm not sure they have proven and competitive quality to tilt at the auto spots.  This view may be contentious.  But I see Watson as too old, to a degree, Geddy as hot and cold, Yates as too young.  Car' is quality but young and unproven in the championship.

There's a case to be made for the greater good.

I'm still looking forward to the next ten games to see how things pan out though.  I just don't believe Forest's building is finished.  It's really only been 8 months.  And only one 'carefully planned' transfer window.  I'd like to see Forest build over another January and another Summer.

Then I think we'll be ready for an assault on the auto spots.  I don't think we're miles off.  But we do need 'next level' 'prime' quality in key positions, still. £14 million would buy 3-4 quality players, hopefully with some proven match winners.

It could be very telling, a reinvestment of the majority of the funds would suggest a statement of ambition, however if we stick the majority in a lock box for a later date it would suggest dwindling faith & an attempt to replenish our war chest.

As for the value of the deal, history is always written by the victors, if he does well & we don't it will be remembered as a bad deal, however if we prosper & he fails we'll laugh at having their pants down.

Late rival for Brereton according to Alan Nixon. He's off it would appear. Just hope his replacement is good.
