Traditionally we have come apart more against the mid table sides than we have the top 6. Just look at our record against current top 7. Played 8 games and have lost once so far.

Play your best team against Charlton, collect 3 points. Anything then against WBA - I. E a draw, is a bonus,. If we take 4 points from next two games then we are on course to finish in the mid 80s points wise.

I find it hard to understand why Charlton have dropped away so badly this season.

When we played them back in August at their place, they played us off the park with some sublime football and at the end of the day, we were lucky to come away with a point. I think they were second at the time!

It just goes to show that if you take your eye off the ball in the Championship, it will bite you on the arse!!

I just think we have a few more weapons to change things now against teams that come and sit deep.

Tuesday night is a chance to prove that Forest are promotion contenders as they host Charlton at the city ground. This is a big game for forest as they have far too often pulled out a result in a big match but then let the chance slip in the following match. It’s time for them to show the mental strength needed by teams who go up and take the three points.

Charlton made life hard for forest in the reverse fixture when they were riding high on the just promoted factor at the beginning of the season. However now they have dropped in form and will be facing forest with a new fighting attitude as they look to gain as many points as they can to avoid the drop. Charlton play either a 4-3-3 or 4-1-2-1-2 formation with the main form of attack being attacking down the wings most notability their left hand side.

Charlton like to have the ball at the back when in possession before playing a more direct pass wide rather than play in the central midfield areas. This way of playing has developed at Charlton this season due to the central midfield being overrun in games and the trust from the team for ball retention centrally has dissolved.

One of Charlton’s biggest strength this season has been the ability to finish chances and a lot has to do with playing with at least two upfront. Playing direct it gives Charlton a chance to have a player close to win the second ball from the knock down or to spin wide into space left from the attacking fullback, while having a target centrally to hit early crosses into the box. By also leaving two or sometimes three upfront Charlton are able to carry out a high press on teams in order to win the ball further up the pitch.

The problem with the high press in Charlton’s case has been they are overeager in their press and commit to many bodies further up the pitch in order to condense the play. What we have seen is that it needs only one player to use skill to beat the pressing man and they leave themselves open to counter-attacking football.

While Charlton are good at scoring chances, they are very weak at holding onto a lead and or stopping chances being made especially from long-range efforts. With the players in forests squad, this is surely an area that forest can take advantage of especially as we are not a team to panic once we concede.

And now onto Charlton’s biggest issue. Charlton do not like to play teams who have pace. If a player can run at the full backs directly with pace then they seem unsure on how to deal with this situation. In games this season they have fallen apart against teams who run at them in wide areas and I can only see this problem continuing as they are more concerned with teams breaking at them centrally and they do not move to support each other in wide areas.
