Selling Our Young Talent

Completely different to the Burke and Brereton sales, they were first team players. Brereton has clearly reached a glass ceiling, Burke is now struggling at Championship level.

Most of the young players sold historically have proved to be for the betterment of the club.

Different type of player. Johnson is a number 10. Appiah a goal scoring winger

This is what you have to do when you run a wages to turnover ratio of 150%! To be fair this is how most teams run their clubs, without prem money we can either try and build a good young team on low wages or continue to fund the current side. Personally happy with either approach.

If we have to sell would rather sell him than a first team starter eg Lolley. Remember we rejected good money for Worrall too so it’s not like we sell all of them

For the NINETH consecutive year we have sold our most saleable asset.

Year on year we have used those funds to buy a load of sub standard dross, I am yet to be convinced this year is any different. Will Appiah’s fee will be spent paying the wages of the 9 or 10 players who will sit on their backsides and never make this years squad?

We have learnt nothing every year up til now, please this time Forest prove me wrong, show me that we have a strategy going on and its not to sell talent to fund yet more scattergun purchases.

Bang on mate. Totally agree

Remind me again what Burke and Brereton have gone onto do?

Right decision on both occasions, this will more than likely be the same.

No issue at all, it's where we are at.

Other than bamford I can't think of a young player we have sold or let go in the last decade that's done much of note .

Burke and bereton look like fantastic deals by us now.

How?

Funding to remain within FFP and how the funds were used.

Grabban or Brereton?
Darlow & Lascalles or Britt & Antonio?
Bamford or Relegation?

Happy to debate but let’s not be overreactionary in relation to a player you’ve barely seen play.

Brereton or Murphy and Soudani?
Darlow and Lascelles or Abdoun, Djebbour and Kelvin Wilson mk2?
Bamford or Ishmail Miller?

Yep we could debate for ages and I accept your point. My issue is that its not just staying FFP, its that we have no strategy as to how we reinvest the money and we make more bad purchases than good ones.
I have no problem with a thought out policy like Brentford have where every young player has their price and that money is put back into the next generation.

The sales and signings I referenced were linked!?

Karanka wanted a known quantity and was happy to sacrifice Brereton to fund that.

Darlow & Lascalles were sold to fund Britt & Antonio.

Had we not sold Bamford we couldn’t have funded the signings Cotterill and SOD wanted to keep us up.

It’s worth noting that the three examples referenced were all under different owners!

FFP is entirely relevant. Our wage bill is inflated and onerous.

I do agree with you that our acquisition strategy has largely been erratic. I personally still do have issues with it. Marinakis has clearly made mistakes since he arrived in how that part of the Club has been run. I think I shouted louder than most about our terrible business in January. Dourekas has been brought in and entrusted with this, am I convinced that he is capable of doing what needs to be done? Not yet.

I don’t however think our disjointed approach to buying players makes selling Appiah for £8n here and now a bad deal.

If the argument that he has potential is the sole reasoning to keep him then based on historical evidence that won’t support such a stance.

The purpose of the academy is to make a profit for the club and provide squad players. It does an excellent job on both counts.

People regularly overhype our academy players. The beginning of this thread is a prime example.

I’ve seen every minute of Appiah’s Forest career and have very little idea of what the hype was about. Conversely, I’ve seen every minute of Brennan Johnson’s career and completely get what the hype is about. I’m glad it’s Appiah we’re selling and not Johnson.
