Yep we probably did play over the odds for him, but it not our money so we don’t need to worry about that and he’s certainly one of the most talented players in this division.

Absolutely delighted for the lad and on his birthday aswell!!

He was exactly that yesterday, credit the team for their contribution prior to his introduction, we had £15 to £20m on the bench yesterday and it showed, there were a few glimmers towards the end of the Stoke game as well, but having a game changer/game winner who can come on ensure the 3 points is extremely positive

Personally I am happy for Carv to be introduced into certain games at certain times and I think yesterdays deployment will become typical, not rule out other variants and cunning to yield the best return and the best growing conditions on the back of cultivating … oops getting distracted .. off to me allotment  :P

Money really does ruin football.
In the end we the fans don't need to worry about money, that's the clubs job. Hopefully for every player that costs too much there is another who is a bargain. I trust this management team not to fall foul of FFP.

We should stop judging players by the price tag, its too over-simplistic.

Carvalho is a good player. Does that mean he should play every game, no. Will his talents be best used in every formation, no.
Was I delighted by his goal and contribution on Saturday, yes. Should he start on Wednesday, I'll leave that to MON.

I'm pleased with the way he's taken it & is now responding, by his own admission he was struggling (Martin's just talked about this to the press), he was taken out of the firing line (pre-Martin), they've worked hard on him, he is responding & to keep him grounded Martin pointed out there's a lot more to do & to come.

I won't gloat, but that is what I've been saying for 2 months to counter the "the dinosaurs to stupid to see it & hates skilful players" nonsense.

Mind you it took some until February to catch on that Grabban has had an Achilles problem.

To many listen to idiot conspiracy theories & not enough listen to facts.

That's why some think Martin's a negative dinosaur, just because "Barry from Lenton" said so on Twitter.

Amen.

He's a super talented player, but hasn't been anywhere near ready for the more crunch games yet. He was one of the worst players on the pitch against Leeds, and in a few games I've seen him start OK, get an early kicking, then disappear.

If anyone can get the best from him though MON can. I used to be a big fan of Raddy & McGugan, but both needed dropping now & then for various reasons. If MON has to do that with Carva to get the best from him so be it.

Brian Clough & Trevor Francis

& I can give you another 672,496 examples of this common managerial tactic if you don't like that one

No one gets a free pass, not even the 'elite', you under-perform, you'll find yourself on the training ground having to win your place back

The best part of all this to me, though, is that the lad is fighting back

Where were the likes of Zach Clough or Apostolos Vellios when they found it hard?

Joao Carvalho has passed his first test & I'm sure Martin & Roy will stay on the case

Edit; worth noting Carvalho is Portuguese for Oak & oaks come from Sherwood Forest, so he's probably half Notts on his mum's side, or something. I'll have to track his mum down & ask her.

Maybe his dad went drinking in the Royal Carvalho in Bulwell  :D

Cavalho is a fine player in possession of the ball but I fear for him in this league. He is the Ozil of Nottingham Forest who splits opinion. There is a place for him in the squad but he has to earn his right to be in the team. O’Neill knows how to get out of this league and it isn’t by carrying passengers....Cavalho is a passenger for a lot of the time who is capable of a sublime piece of vision/skill. He is the one pinged golf shot that makes you go next time so you can feel it again. Sadly, that isn’t enough. Where does he go when we have our backs to the wall? That’s when you want to see a Yates tackle or a Colback clenched fist. Clearly, that will never be Cavalho’s game but then he must show himself more, influence the game more, be brave and take responsibility more. Brian Clough loved Gary Crosby and John McGovern. Not because they were amazingly skillfull players but because no matter how bad the game was going for them, they never shirked their team responsibility, always did their shift and never ever hid. I am convinced that this same message is what O’Neill is trying to get across to the young Portuguese. If Calvarho listens and learns, then he will improve 100%. But I must say that his previous club must be laughing all the way to the bank.

Woody agree 100% .... his look following his goal on Saturday wasnt a look that you expect from someone that is learning but from someone that is holding a grudge. If he is really being mentored by MON or Roy, following that goal, he should have ran to them and embrace them in recognition of what they are training him ... I am sorry to say that his look is more for the first then the latter ... hope that I am wrong on this ....
I am saying this as I was a coach myself and I know how young players behave when they reap benefit from something that their coach have been coaching and training them on .... we will know the response tomorrow I guess... if he starts it means that he is back in the good books, if he remains on the bench it means that they (MON & RK) are still not convinced on the boy...

I don't remember John Robertson our most skillful and creative player of all time ever producing a Colback type tackle or a clenched fist. Ball players are the ones that can win difficult games but the team has to balance together so that they can be ok if the skilled one "goes missing". Both Robbo and Carvalho were valuable because they stood away from the tackling to receive the ball and then hurt the opposition. Having said that I applaud the way that MON is strengthening Jao's game because he needs to gain an appetite for the battle to become a real star.

Cisco, Robby was constantly involved even out on the wing. I also remember Robbo coming back and producing the odd sliding tackle. He never hid. Besides that ill advised comparison, Robbo was world class and Cavalho is struggling in the championship. No comparison.
