We would have mullered them.
More than likely. The winner of our semifinal was always likely to be the overall winner.
But we were comprehensively beaten by Villa, probably in many ways are most one sided defeat of the season.
Villa have been outstanding in the tournament, worthy winners and no shame in going out to them.
Yes I agree Villa were worthy winners of the cup.
The real final was Villa - Forest and they beat us.
The 2 teams in the other semi final were shocking.
Just a shame we never got to see our full team in action against theirs. That is in part due to the fact that we were fighting so hard in the league too, perhaps were we safer we could've taken a more relaxed approach akin to Villa, I think its fair to say they earned that.
One thing that is really a shame, and perhaps this reflects our earlier group performances. If we had managed to get on the other side of the draw to Villa, I think we had a much better chance in a one off match against them in Istanbul (we did beat them at the CG so we showed can beat them).
Also think Porto were better than either of the teams in the other semi comfortably.

Although we can give anyone a game on our day I think we have to accept Villa are still ahead of us. Theres no shame in that, I don’t believe even our strongest team could have won that 2nd leg. They were also very good last night as poor as Freiburg were. Im actually quite glad we didn’t get them in the final, travel to Istanbul and got a pasting.

Yeah they did finish 3rd compared to our 16th, fairly clear they are a better team right now. Doesn't mean we couldn't beat them in a one off game though, just probably wouldn't. Finals level the playing field a bit too, could definitely imagine a scenario where we ground them down and took them to penalties.
I also think the level we played at in the final months of the season was hopefully a better presentation of our true level, much closer to last year in terms of results/performances.

Villa are 2 years ahead of us but have a very expensive and aging squad. They are hamstrung by European SCR next year and whilst we will be have to be careful with no European football next year we have a real opportunity to crack on in the league. I can see us really kick on in the league and cups next year. A striker is must and Ando replacement will be interesting. I do have a bit of a worry with Hutchinson/mcatee/ndoye - one of these needs to show some balls!

No problem with that although isn’t it a bit of an admission the the Conference League was actually the better call with an excellent chance of a trophy and a place in the Europa next season?

Indeed. Ironically the outcome is probably going to end up better for them - winning a trophy and ending up in the Europa League anyway.
