Initial reaction was a bit meh - not my first choice but I think given strong personality's involved he will be a good man manager and thats what we need more then anything. Guy is obviously a legend and at this stage of his career what ever happens won`t damage it. I`m with a few others about the ROI years - you cant polish a turd.

I still remember Leicester's 'winner' that got them promoted via the Play Offs. I had an affection for Martin's style at Leicester of direct dynamic mixer. His side always put up a fight. And Forest need that in this league. Vs Reading, Forest looked like the hole had dropped out the bottom of their season. Now, that season is in the balance. 4-5 signings, some force of will and leadership. Let's see where that takes 'us.' SA.

I think we can be a tad deluded in terms of our overall quality. Coleman, Duffy, Clark, Ward, Brady, Hendrick, Arter, Doherty, Christie all premiership players for Ireland.

Very average PL players - not international standard.

Still PL players though which is what we don't have any of I'm afraid so the argument 'polishing a turd' is redundant; he will be working with even inferior players with us.

I have just put this in another thread but I will put it here too:
Just to put this Ireland thing to bed. Giovanni Trapattoni, remember him? He is considered to be the most successful manager EVER in Serie A in Italy. Did he manage to do anything with Ireland though in the 5 years he was there? Did he f**k!

All relative though, Ireland had some very poor performances and results against weaker countries too. It's all well and good deciding to selectively erase his time in charge of Ireland but it is his most recent post and should be debated. He was very poor in charge of Sunderland too and any success was over a decade ago but fingers crossed it works out here. |
