For those of you that are interested, I found a quite good article covering the 10 attributes a modern day goalkeeper should master.
The 10 attributes are:
- Shot-stopping
- Handling
- Reflexes
- Aerial command
- Big game ability
- Penalty-saving
- Distribution (feet)
- Distribution (arm)
- Sweeping
- The ultimate blend
How would you say our own Pants fits into the category of a modern day goalkeeper?

In my opinion Pantilimon fails to fall into the category of a modern day goalkeeper based on those attributes!

Out of ten:
- Shot-stopping 6.5
- Handling 6
- Reflexes 7
- Aerial command 4
- Big game ability 6
- Penalty-saving 5
- Distribution (feet) 3
- Distribution (arm) 6
- Sweeping 6
- The ultimate blend 6.5
Not good enough or bang average at best.

I would argue:
Handling 5.
Aerial command 3.
Summary, below average and a weak link.

his distribution is his downfall. he has also left some pretty soft goals in during the year.

I agree with the comments made here and would like to add that I'm not at all impressed by his distribution and ball to feet. I would score him:
- Distribution (feet) 1
- Distribution (arm) 3
- Sweeping 2
- The ultimate blend 4.5 (compared to the big ones - Ederson, De Gea, Alisson)

I believe we are all very much in agreement when it comes to Pants but do anyone on this forum have any good suggestions of potential keeper targets that would manage a score above average and thus closer the what we would consider a modern day goalkeeper?

We have been linked with a loan move for Tom Heaton which obviously would be great but I doubt very much that he will want to leave. Has started the latest two Premier League games for Burnley (both won).

I honestly cant see what the problem is with Smith. Yes, I accept that he struggled with distribution, but he was expected, no he was required, by Warburton to try to play out from the back, even under a high press. Karanka would give him more flexibility to kick the ball long if he needed to. It's what Pants has been doing of late.
Smith would also be bolstered by having Fox / Dawson / Figs in front of him too. That'll make a huge difference.
He's got a season's experience in him so he cant be considered to be rookie any more and his shot stopping was excellent I thought (Ipswich worldy save for example). He's definately worth another shot IMO.
