Watching the Leeds game back he was so important in that frantic first half cutting off passing lanes and forcing wide but where is his conductor passing? Interesting him and Colback totally shut off the midfield second half - a very intelligent midfielder. I’m interested in how this thread develops with insights so I can explain more to my son why he should play every week! Other than without him you will see the difference! I think this is absolutely key in understanding his role. He is very good at taking away passing lanes and also at taking away space where opponents want to carry the ball. He is also very good at the initial short, quick pass when we regain possession. As has been said, his role is different with us than with Switzerland and Atalanta where he played slightly further up. We play with far less possession so his positioning is a bit deeper.

Thanks to all of you who have replied and there are some consistent things there particularly around tackling and interceptions. The stats some have provided help too, there is another one here that backs that up although doubt many expected to see Neco so far up the table
I do appreciate the good things and accept a lot of his work is around closing down space stopping the opponent playing. Just thought someone with a name like the conductor would offer more in terms of bringing the ball out, all I seem to see from him is a 5 yards sideways pass or knocking it back to Worrall. A few of you have said we dont play with high possession but isnt that the job of the midfield? Ive heard a few times that the reason some of the forwards aren’t performing is because of lack of service. And the reason the defence is under so much pressure is that we dont keep the ball in midfield. So isnt that Freuler’s job? Or do we blame the rest of the midfield? Regardless would expect Coopers first choice if fit will be Shelvey Yates and Freuler. Anyhow the views are interesting, probably split into 3 neat categories Im in a very small minority that doesn’t/hasnt rated him (although seen it said on other platforms) Most of you can see and appreciate what he brings The rest of you arent too sure what he brings either but you dont care because it seems we play better with Freuler in the team! Maybe thats a good place to be!

The stats some have provided help too, there is another one here that backs that up although doubt many expected to see Neco so far up the table I think you're right and probably indicates where his level lies. He's a good player able to perform the role asked of him and able to cover a few different roles within different systems. However, he's not a difference maker in the sense that his ability alone isn't going to improve the team sufficiently to control the ball more etc and therefore be able to play more of that "conductor" role. Ie if the players around him improved he could offer more but not on his own, doesn't not make him good at what he is doing. Which is probably mirrored in the team performances in that we don't concede loads of chances but also make don't threaten as much. It'll be interesting to see how Steve develops the tactics over time and whether his role is expanded in the future as surely if we want to be better in midfield that would be required. Or whether Shelvey has been signed to play that role and he's asked to continue to do the same job. Maybe Shelvey allows him more license, we'll see.

Freuler apparently is a coaches dream is what I have heard so we can draw some conclusions from that.

Bump.
I stand by my original question. Does anyone else want to start another thread “What does Chris Wood actually do?”

I think wood is a decent player, but actually much better when we play to his feet, back to goal, holding off the defender and playing off him. However, we seem to just lump it somewhere in his vicinity and hope he can win it..... never going to work. He's being used wrong!
