Yeah I thought this too, so many underhit through ball opportunties, was incredibly frustrating. Not to mention Dennis repeatedly losing the ball in attacking areas rather than playing it across to Brennan.
He did look uncomfortable on the wing though, not sure if his confidence is a bit down from the start to the season but he seemed to struggle to get involved in the same way the MGW did on the other side. I think part of it was he was being asked to play a new position as he was dropping into a 451 without the ball, had to do a lot more defensive work which I thought he did well on. Most of Villa's play came through Cash on the right, where MGW kept being left behind.
MGW did show what Brennan needs to do in the second half though, got on the ball and affected the game. His best game for us so far.

Agree with all of that Wassy. MGW and Dennis did affect the game, to a certain degree. Johnson though lets the games pass him by. If he's not getting service, or he's up against a defender who's sitting on him then he looks like a luxury player, hence people saying it's like playing with 10 men.
I'd definitely sit him out next game. The trouble is, who would we play in his place? Lingard cant be trusted to put the defensive work in as he's hampered by his man boobs.

I would go 4312 with MGW behind Dennis and Awoniyi/Surridge.
Alternatively a flat front 3 works with that combo too.
Either way we have some alternatives for Johnson who Im not writing off, could be good for him to come off the bench.

If cooper got the balls to bench club captain and may stay of last years defense worrall I can’t see why he can’t bench Johnson

I think he relies on the 'Hail Mary" that at some point in the 90 minutes Johnson might actually get the ball, not lose it, do something with it and score.
However, for the other 85 minutes its like having 10 men.
Cooper needs to bench Johnson for a few games........use him as an impact sub to run against tired legs and defenders on a yellow card. Finish strong.....and win games in the last 20 minutes.......not lose them.

The 10 men thing is excessive and tiring. He actually defended well, playing in basically a new position last night. Made a lot of runs that didn't get anywhere due to a lack of service but that doesn't mean he wasn't playing.
I'm not denying that it might not be a terrible idea for him to get rotated, I'm sure Dennis would prefer to play right.
Although, up until the second half yesterday MGW had equally done nothing of any note, just pointless flicks and repeatedly losing the ball. Plus Dennis started well but he lost the ball so many times just running and getting tackled, it was so frustrating. I get Brennan is this week's scapegoat but he is not the only weakness up there.

Surely we don't want to change formation again?!
Think it'll be 433 until the WC now. Dennis on the right would be preferable for him anyway.

Johnson is getting shocking service mgw failed twice to put the ball through , dennis miss placed 2 passes one straight out for a throw when BJ would of got in behind . Surridge had one cut out 1” higher and brennan is in . Even hedo rolled the ball out behind him when about to launch a counter , Aurier and Williams both hit poor balls down the line .
BUT FORGET ALL THAT ITS BRENNANS FAULT !
Also he helped out alot defensively last noght and stuck to his task keeping the shape , I would rather him be pressing high !

I agree Reg but BJ has to have some responsibility for what goes on on the pitch too. Last week at Leicester he made a bit of a solo run into the box to make something happen. Why's there not more of that happening? MGW and Dennis were trying things, even if there weren't coming off.

Agree Pap. The service to him is poor but it doesnt mean he just has to wait for the perfect ball to find him otherwise he might not touch the ball for the rest of the season. He has to at least try something himself.

Totally agree he needs to do more , last week he did that brilliant solo run , another one where he put one on a plate for Lingard and another chance that i remember , he also had that miss-hit shot. But for him to create these chances he actually got the ball the standard of passing apart from that of yates , frueler and Mckenna last night was awful.
