Newcastle United - Nottingham Forest

Well that was a tough watch. Newcastle were very very good and aside from some wayward finishing did everything their manager would want.

Positives 
- We don't have to play away to Newcastle again in the league-they will be a formidable prospect  for anyone.
- Colback looked decent-which suggests some of our more heralded players will settle into this level hopefully sooner rather than later.
-Got ourselves a top keeper.
- That first game is out of the way.
-Mangala looked like a calm head .
-Daughter was on Football Focus.
- Our support was very loud.

Negatives 
- Newcastle completely imposed their game on us and we seemed unable to do anything about it.
- It could have been 4 or 5, our defence was very easily  unpicked.
- We struggled to get any quality into our front men.
- Williams looks a terrific player, but lacks the dynamism to get us up the pitch, or recovery pace to get back in.
-Toffolo was exposed.
- Niakhate will have better games.

Nothing to panic about. At home we need to be strong and impose our game on opposition. Bournemouth are no better than us and won at home so fingers crossed. 
Stating the obvious that we need to play much better-and I believe we will.

Assume Cook was injured as not on bench, but I felt we missed his calm head. Alot of the defending was last ditch and desperate. 

What worries  me most?? Getting next away tickets. Got Everton though, awaiting the bun fight for Man City and Dirtyleeds...

No point having the extra man in midfield if the ball doesn’t stick up top.

How we all feeling this morning then? I feel any hopes of a good start are out the window now. 

Worth remembering last year we were bottom after 8 games and remember what happened next.

Right now I'm not convinced the team is as good as the ones from Wembley on paper, not even counting the lack of knowledge from playing together.

We'll always have Wembley right!

That’s not how we’ll play with five in midfield, we’ll use the wide men to get balls in the box.

When we went 2 down i did worry that we might let a couple of more in in the last 15 mins or so. The fact we didnt is a positive I suppose. Small one.

When we went 2 down i did worry that we might let a couple of more in in the last 15 mins or so. The fact we didnt is a positive I suppose. Small one.

A significant positive I would say. Some frustration, but they kept going till the end, kept trying to do what they could with the ball, and kept throwing themselves in front of it in defence. If you accept that is our reserve midfield and we’re playing against a really good side, then couple that attitude with 2 or 3 quality additions that we hope for and things can improve nicely.

The Biggest miss yesterday was Yates’y and Garner . Joelinton overpowered us in midfield allowing Bruno to impose his game we didn’t win any 2nd balls in midfield . Probably should of matched them up 2nd half and gone 4 at the back . Hopefully Mangala finds his feet quickly . Deffinatley need another ST , LWb , ball winning CM and deep lieing playmaker. I wonder if we can get MGW and Garner .

I was a bit shell-shocked, Newcastle were far better than I thought they would be and I understand that they have much of the same squad from last year. They certainly passed with accuracy and speed whereas we did not. It seems when we passed it was usually cut out, that was coupled with a real hard press. One good thing is that Cooper has all week to work with them.

I hope when the League Cup starts we play the same 11, we should take every opportunity to get everyone comfortable with each other.
