If he wins out in the contract with us and secures his £8m release fee effectively he could leave as and when he chooses. He'd basically be in a position at every window where HE and he alone gets to decide if he's leaving or staying. The club would be mad to allow him to dictate such terms and I hope they stick to their guns.

Both parties know he's not going to get a clause below market value. An 8m clause and he just be sold for 8m straight away! I'm sure there's creative clauses they could put in depending on results.

I dont think we should sell in Jan though unless we get 15m+. We'll still get that in the summer and he's a mainstay of the team, wouldn't be able to replace him and can use him to push up the table. His value will increase if he keeps doing well and there's always a chance he signs after seeing the progression

Get to the Summer and he has one year left; the big Clubs who may be interested will sit tight and offer him a lucrative signing on deal rather than pay us his worth.

A mid table side may make an offer but it will be nothing like what we want.

He has the potential to be a brilliant player but we will not benefit; if we manage to persuade him to sign a deal on our terms, his father will be hawking him round PL clubs before the ink is dry.

Is there the cash to splash that big in January? If he’s ‘going’ to the mid-lower prem can teams really afford to buy someone untested at that level when they might just end up in relegated by the end of the season. I’d assume teams might wait go for someone more tested if so and maybe come back to us in the summer.

I would say yes for most teams but Brentford recruit a bit differently to that so that would be my worry in that regard. Leeds are very keen too. He may well sign with us on our terms yet which will put the ball firmly back in our court if we can negotiate a decent release clause. 

I think we will get some pre Christmas cheer on this one.

Sign a new contract and he gets to pick and choose from more options in the summer and he can set his sights higher, more like Southampton, Leicester level, probably on higher wages too.

Yep agree with that first paragraph Salv.  But Jonno snr seems to have the balls to resist this new contract offer so I wouldn't put it past him to actually refuse a move to a Norwich or a Watford type club and hold out for better.

The only leverage the club has is game time. He knows hes in the shop window and looking good atm. The club could just refuse to play him unless he signs without the release clause.

Unless I hear a real justification for the need for a release clause in a youngsters contract (such as player x and player y being denied a career changing move) then I'm going to be of the mindset that the Johnson family is just out to earn a few million quid off the back of the clubs academy system. I'll be honest, it's beginning to taint my view of the player now. No player is ever bigger than the club or its fans.
