Thoughts On The Next Nottingham Forest Manager

I'm gonna put this out there and wait for the pelters.....I reckon Muphy got lucky at Barnsley - had a punt on manager who came good for him. He's unlikely to be able to have the same luck a second time.

The last 2 Barnsley managers have been poached. Struber got nicked too. His last 2 appointments have been excellent. When was the last time we had a manager poached? Was it Platt?

When was the last time Forest recruited players well?

SA.
Last season apparently, we had one of the best teams on paper apparently, just a shame your pal hughton couldn't do anything with it, he turned a 20 goal striker in a defensive forward, how many goals has he scored with his tactics? We had a worse attacking threat under sabri, still finished better than hughton, a manager with no experience showing the great cv hughton up, not saying I was sabri back, but hughton is not as great as your trying to make out and defend him for, he's had over 50 games, and nothings changed, like you say we could have dike from Barnsley, but noway would he score the way we play

Grabban still scored about 6 goals with a hip injury and two other injuries in an injury hit season.  We even had to wait for Worrall and Grabban to come back to help the team out.  And he's getting those injuries because under Sabri, Grabban was flogged as was Lolley.  Too over played players who are feeling it now.  And Grabban is old.  He's at least a year past his sell by date.

Did Forest recruit well last year?

Which largely governed the way Forest play. Good players play good football. There was nothing sparkling about Aitor, MoN, Warburton or Sabri's dour stale ball. All pretty boring 4231 set ups devoid of any real pace and quite pedestrian and predictable.

Have they brought in a striker this year? So how are Forest going to score the goals to escape the relegation vortex?

People might want Hughton gone and responsible for circumstances beyond his choosing but who is to say the next 'lucky dice' roll doesn't take Forest down?

The best team on 'paper' had collapsed under Sabri (the master of dour, stale ball...), had little pre-season and lost four games straight (and lost in pre-season too...). Even he started the season with fullbacks (albeit it mediocre ones.)

Sabri was starting from a younger Grabban and Lolley who were injury free had the chance to bring in a mountain of players and a year to get to know that team and still fluffed his lines. Very lucky he got Sow. Made his team look better than it was. Which was a mid-table side.

Hughton's record of promotion and goals with Brighton and Newcastle speaks for itself.  He's not my 'mate.'  Is he?  I don't know the guy. But he does seem a decent and honest type of 'chap.'

He's had '50' games with '0' permanent outfield players.  Atrocious backing.  And hardly making use of his talents.  At all.

Forest didn't win the first four games because they were crap.  And recruitment left them far weaker than the team that narrowly avoided relegation (with Hughton's inspires January signings.  Garner and Krov' being the notable parts of the Forest 'escape.')

The manager had to give post match interviews hinting that they needed 'help' and players to come in.  But they came in far too late to stop Forest tossing 12 points.  You don't start a season without fullbacks and a striker.

Last season is gone.  Largely a product of Mr. V's recruitment and Sabri's own failings.  Had Hughton been brought in at the beginning and narrowly avoided relegation?  I might see things differently.  But Forest didn't.

Did they?

I am not going to lie but the same thing has crossed my mind too.

I'm not saying it's my cast-iron view Sniff, just a worry I have. I don't want to kick our new guy but I've got a worry that he's just got lucky in his last job and come across a manager who managed to get absolute 100% performances from the players in every minute of every game. Anyway enough negativity...

That is a different question entirely. But Dane has certainly appointed 2 excellent managers in recent times. Struber set the foundations and it continued. When your last 2 have both been pinched that is not a bad place to be, you know you are doing something right.

You're right, if the big boys start taking an interest you're doing things well. I know little about Strubar but if he'd not been lucky and come up against a pathetic Forest side on the second to last game of the season and got his team relegated, would he still be regarded as being an 'excellent' manager?

This is what's on his Wikipedia page re his Barnsley time:

'On 20 November 2019, Struber was appointed as manager of EFL Championship side Barnsley, penning a two-year deal. He succeeded Daniel Stendel.[3][4] Barnsley were bottom of the league, seven points away from safety. They were consigned to the relegation zone for most of the 2019–20 campaign. With two stoppage time wins against Nottingham Forest and Brentford at the end of the season, Struber guided Barnsley to securing Championship football for a second successive season. It was helped by Wigan Athletic falling into administration and getting 12 points deduction. For the 2020–21 season Struber strived to get a stable team, as he did not want to be in the relegation zone again and had ambitious goals for the future of the club.'

Was he good or just lucky?

Yup.  Forest made him lucky.

We also helped Ferguson get really lucky.

I really rate struber and going back on different threads when we were on the verge of sacking Sabri, that I would of liked to of seen him here.

When you watched what he was trying to implement at Barnsley is something I could buy in to. You could see it. He got lucky with the 12 point deduction absolutely hedid, but that does not detract from the foundations he tried to build and play the type of football he did.

Very much in your face high tempo football with the emphasis on winning the ball back as high up the field as possible to increase scoring opportunities. I liked what I saw and clearly others did too in terms of the red bull brigade.

But you cannot say his 2 appointments were not good ones. To turn 7 points around regardless of circumstance is a success.

Howay strawberry just cause he's had no players does not mean he has not been backed, he's had over 25m worth of players/talent on loan, he brought his own players in knocky and Murray in, how good were they?

An interesting one, think he is more defensive than Hughton though.

One season he's team scored 36 and conceded 44, he's more defensive than hughton, plays 4 2 3 1 as well, out of the frying pan...

Happy to take your word for it then MR. You clearly know much much more about him/them than I do.

So it seems that Ishmael was Dane's replacement manager who stat's suited the style of football / player already established at Barnsley. What do we reckon he'll build on at our club because our recent style, developed over the last two managers, is one of steady, defensive, low scoring football. Not something to build on really. Will he try to change the philosophy and go high energy/press like he did at Barnsley?

Hmm. He is Lateral based possession manager. Rather than moving forward, his teams work more with switching play to create space. Players normally follow a zonal based formation and movement pattern. Likes width with central players moving wide and wingers coming in when his teams have the ball. FB's will move to central Midfield area to act as balance. Started mgnt career playing 4-3-3 but now moved to 4-2-3-1.

He does however like a press system in the simliar style of Sabri when without he ball. Cutting of passes except the one we wan them to make in order to move them into an area to create a trap.

Kind of goes against everything in our new CEO's MOC

Yes I am taking it with a pinch of salt for now. It's a name that dropped onto my lap but it's NOT from the same bloke who told me about Drager, Lowe and Garner.
