So when everyone is fit could we see something like.....
------------------------------------Samba--------------------------------------
-------------Worrall-------------Mbe Soh----------McKenna----------------
Spence--------Ojeda-----------Garner------------Zinckernagel------Lowe
-----------------------Johnson-------------Grabban--------------------------
Or swap Spence for Osei-Tutu, Johnson for Silva, Grabban for Taylor etc.
So, in your opinion it is the formation that is the issue and changing that and adding an extra defender will bring more attacking threat?
You can put a positive spin on it too, I prefer 343 myself, but what it does is allow you to press higher up the pitch without potentially leaving big holes, it gets your attacking full backs higher up the pitch to enable that press, which in turn could see us turning the ball over higher up the field giving us more opportunities to pounce on opposition mistakes and get scoring opportunities but it all depends on your mentality and approach.
I'm not so sure CH will go with a high press and so far there has been no sign of it as a team so you are right HT could just end up being a back 5 allowing teams onto us.
Over to you CH.
Out of curiosity, what is the preferred (or fashionable) system in the Championship? 433? 343? 5231 (seems to be or has been used alot by Forest in previous years and with previous managers going back to Aitor.)

I agree with that MR but as you say I'm not sure CH will allow his FB to push that far up so you in effect end up with 5 players at the back.
You could also get the same effect in a 4-2-3-1 formation if one of your DMC drop in between your CB when your team is pressing high or attacking. For me it is more about the basic approach and how much risk you are willing to expose yourself to.
You can mate, at times Ben Watson did that under Lamouchi to create that 3. We just do not have that type now, and we have 3 excellent centre backs that will make us defensively stronger whilst allowing us to get higher up the pitch so I'd just personally go 343.
I think it would need a manager change for that but I'm open to be surprised.

Yates and Fornah are both somebody that could possibly step into that kind of role.

Fornah maybe, but you need to be a good distributor to play that role and be quick with the passing too if your full backs are part of a back 4 as they naturally start deeper in position so I'm not convinced at all that Yates has that in the locker.

This debate is probably fairly irrelevant based on CH history that was posted elsewhere.
Tails was clearly briefed about the 433 so I'm assuming that's what we'll see on Sunday. It is a bit worrying as it's not a formation CH has played much, I'm not sure he's capable of setting a team up like that.
I would prefer we just followed his previous teams and played 442 with Johnson as the second striker. Not because it's the best tactics or best use of the team but simply that's what CH knows, so play to his strengths. Maybe not got the height up top for that.

In his last season at Brighton CH preferred to play 4-3-3 so he has no problem with setting that up.
I believe the debate is still relevant as it is about how offensive your FB can/should be (risk taking). 4-3-3 can easily be 3-4-3 if one of the midfielders drop back into defense and the two full backs push forward.

Totally agree 3/4/3 would be my choice too and yes yates would be back up CB he is very limited in his passing but can tackle, good at getting his head on ball (defensively), strong , not slow and puts body on line I think it would be his best position. Soh Mckenna and wozza all good on ball and defensively , allowing the attacking FB we have signed to push on and garner/odeja to dictate play from cm and Brennan Zinc and our other forwards to play high and press
And for teams to beat that they have to go long and thats fine to our big 3 CB .
So to me yes it would make us more attacking playing a extra defender

From what I read this formation was his undoing at Brighton! :D

Systems can be very fluid.
4-3-3.
Yates as the destroyer of the middle three. Garner the play switcher. Oj the maestro on the ball. All 3 have some defensive power and varying levels of passing. I think that could be a good three. If the wingbacks/fullbacks play a high line, then it becomes a 2-5-3 in flight. 4-3-3 when defending.
Your front 3 are probably Silva/Brennan, Zinc Man and Grabban.
There's also the option of 4-1 (Yates or Garner sitting) 4-1. You have Oj, Zinc Man in the middle, Brennan and Silva on the wings. Lyle up front. Or Grabban.
How best to deploy the more flexible and balanced squad Hughton has at his disposal now. He did make the point when someone suggested a different formation that you need options to do that. (eg. for a 3 at the back. He noted that Worrall and Soh were out.)

I'm sure the quality of the players at his disposal had a part to play too. ;) (He's spent the last year at Forest getting hammered for not turning the Sabri '14' into top 6 world beaters (which the New CEO unceremoniously binned...) and this year getting hammered for not having fullbacks at his disposal (or that striker...)

So in effect the midfield 3 is a 6 and 2 x 8’s in a 4-3-3 as appose to a 4-2-3-1 having 2 x number 6’s and a number 10.
Garner, Ojeda, Zinckernagel for me are the 3
Front 3 are Grabban, Johnson and either Mighten/Silva.

Yep or perhaps based on the Johnson striker thing that Tails was briefed, you could even have Johnson, Mighten and Silva if he's any good. Probably not straight away though.
