Richardson will go on loan as soon as we sign a left back.
He couldn’t get a regular game at L2 level last season so there is no way he can be even second choice.

Blackett will need to cover LB and CB positions.

By all accounts, he has done well so far this pre-season, including scoring a goal. If he is back to his old self, it would solve the Garner conundrum and CH could move on with building his side without the delay from the likes of Man Utd holding him back

I think Hughton was holding Colback back last season to give him every chance of being 100% fit this season. It sounds like he's getting back to his best along with Lolly.

Controversial take perhaps but I'm almost happy we've done no business yet.

I know the LB situation is awkward, it would be easier if Blackett wasn't injured. However, just reading Tails comments on his article and mentioned how far ahead the parachute payment teams are. It's spot on as a point, too long we've tried to push our budget to close the gap and sneak a playoff place.

It seems like this year we're finally attempting to build a squad which is the only way we're going to realistically make a long term challenge unless parachute payments change. I get we're almost writing the first month off by leaving us so short in defence. However, surely the long term is more important rather than just plugging the gaps with the usual mid table plodders. It's going to be hard for CH, a few scrappy wins could really set us up until the squad becomes settled.

We've got about half the players there:

Samba/Horvath, Worrall (or Soh if he leaves), McKenna, Mighten, Lolley, Johnson (or Carvalho) feel like players that would be starters for most teams and are a good base. Plus Yates if he can raise his game again. Just shows we have potential but don't want to fill out the squad for the sake of it.

3 signings of the level above and then let them grow together. We should be thinking about promotion next season or the year after, not this year.

Good post that Wassy. the club will go up when it's a Prem club, simple as that. Trying to "cheat" our way there before we are ready just ends up giving us the messes we've recently had.

We do need players to ensure we steer clear of the drop. But if that's take until deadline day I'm fine with that so long as they are the right players. We signed Bong, Blackett & Ianounou all within the same year, and where did that get us at left back? Nowhere. I'll gladly hang on to Sep, esp if we end up with the next Stuart Pearce instead of several random useless spods.

I’m not worried with the lack of signings. We have a strong nucleus and with the right signings can challenge for top 6. Would rather us be patient to get the right signings. And if we don’t get quite what we want, then don’t blow the budget we have on dumb wages for has-beens.

Don’t think relegation is an issue. Don’t mistake the underperformance of last season with us being that bad. A lot of people won’t have it but the manager made us finish that low, and if he is doing it again Dane won’t accept it, and the new manager will pull us up the league.

Good times are ahead.
