Of our upcoming run this is definitely one of the better fixtures, we played well vs Swansea last season too.
Confidence boosting victory to boost confidence? I'd like to see Ioannou back at LB, anyone but Yates in CM and Guerroro back up top. Also I'd keep ameobi in alongside either of the other wingers. Sorry about Yates, I think he adds value in some aspects of his play but also he has fundamental issues our positioning and in a 442 its so important. Yates/colback is never going to be a winning partnership. If he picks Yates still, then drop colback

I'd be happy with that, only thing I'd say against that is with Worrall almost fit, is there loads of value bringing Soh in for a few games? Maybe more of a gamble? That said Figs once again made a big mistake that cost us last game

He's not even playing for the U23s, get him on the pitch and get him developing, he's unlikely to be worse than Figs already! Then play 3 at the back when Worrall is fit. Yates & Arter in CM, we don't need Colback 'protecting' with 3 at the back and those centre halves can distribute the ball. Use wing backs, get on the front foot.

Mbe Soh RCH, Worral CCH and McKenna LCH. Ribs on the left wing and Christie on the right, then we dont have to worry quite as much about both FB's positioning and both Ribs and Christie do have pace on the wings

I agree with the promotion of Mbe Soh - but I suspect he’ll stick with Figs until Worrall is fit to resume. His conservatism will prevent him from asking McKenna to play alongside a series of centre back partners.

Fair point it might protect our lack of defensive ability at full back. Has CH ever played this tactic though?

Not sure, personally, but he would have to play along the lines of 3-5-2 or 3-5-1-1 . Would a 3-4-2-1 work?

Soh do I Sniffer (reference Figs) been advocating this for a few matches or so. alternatively play him as the DM because with his range of passing and forward thinking it might just work!

Maybe more of a gamble? I would guess more of a 3-4-2-1, with the '2' being Knockaert, Ameobi for example, like the 2 widish advanced mids of the '3' in a 4-2-3-1. It's not a million miles from what we have played previously, in 4-1-4-1 or 4-2-3-1. Instead of having a Watson or Colback screen the defence or drop into them and the full backs move up the pitch, we play with 3 at the back who are able to distribute themselves and have a bit more responsibility, and the full backs become generally more offensive. We often complain that we're disjointed, too big a gap between compartments on the pitch. I think this would give more emphasis on bodies supporting attacking play, and play into the strengths / avoid weaknesses we have at the back. As ever, tweak it based on opposition. Would like to see it tried, but no I don't expect it!

If we're playing experience instead of developing our prospects we at least need to be getting performances, but it's been obvious since last season that Figs needed to be dropped. Purely from an asset value perspective, FFP and not selling our youth prematurely and all that, Figs' value has gone down from repeatedly playing him, whereas Mbe Soh's should be going up unless we've bought a dud, but obviously won't without getting on the pitch. He's 19 and a half, he's young but not a baby, and once Worrall is in the side with McKenna how does he get game time then? And if we sell Worrall - please for the love of God don't, if we were to sell him and buy Knockaert I will go ballistic - we want to have tested his ability to step up as replacement? |
