Why Do Nottingham Forest Keep Failing?

If it was my decision:

Make Gary Brazil director of football for the first team.
Bring in a manager known for developing young talent.
Build from within, squad centred around the academy.
Transfer policy no incoming players above 25years old (they are cheaper too)
Stick with the plan 3 years minimum.

It would annoy the teenagers on twitter that want instant gratification but I think most proper fans would buy into the ethos of developing our own players with our own identity. It would not be quick though and there would be probably some backward steps along the way. But I am sick of the overpaid crap I have watched for the last 21 seasons, I would prefer to watch a team I genuinely liked again at whatever level.

On the whole we've tried much worse ideas over last 21 years!

One tweak for me, only sign over 25 year olds on a free and within a strict wage structure. An older head or two (not a f@cking army of them like now on a last big contract) is valuable.  As Cloughies young team was emerging around 87 Ian Bowyer was important around likes of Webb, Walker, Clough and even Pearce who took over as captain aged around 23 if I recall correctly?

I agree with the idea of focusing recruitment on up and coming talent, academy and hopefully the likes of Ollie Watkins from a division below or McGinn. I'd be happy to give that some time, complemented by a few experienced heads. But we'd need people who can pick the talent. I think we'd need to recruit someone who can do that too :)

We do need a 5 year plan, but not one centred around a manager. Managers come and go, and one isn’t going to stay for such a long period. A plan centred around a manager means when he leaves we are back to square one. We’ve made this same short termist mistake over and over in the past twenty years.
A plan needs to be followed regardless of who the current manager is. Brentford’s plan continues regardless of who their coach is.

Well I personally think that is the wrong strategy then, we don’t need to keep playing with the brake on. Hughton at moment hasn’t really got a tune out of them, and I guess if wanted like for like, that’s what we are getting, but not exactly entertaining or successful is it

After 5 games? It isn’t the instant gratification that some fans want, no.

Hughton has 3 promotions to his name. With respect, I trust his tactical judgement far more than I trust yours.

Spot on. I would actually like to see the club publish a kind of manifesto setting out what their vision is. I know they wont but it would just be reassuring to know there was a strategy. I am far from convinced we have one.

Thats the problem, we have never followed it through. The Paul Hart experiment fell apart when David Johnson broke his leg, we couldnt score for toffee and ended up sacking him bringing in the Kinnear/Megson era.

But looking back I suspect for a great many of us, that season under Hart was probably the most enjoyable one of the last 21 years. We developed a promising young team with our own identity, that was truly Nottingham Forest. It was really good while it lasted.
