Circumstance is much the reason for our apparent ‘scatter-gun’ signings and multiple acquisitions.
Lest we forget that when we were promoted we had about 6 first team players left. Buying a whole squad was necessary.
The next season we had to get rid of the dead wood from that exercise and build again.
Things were going nicely and then we overachieved and got into Europe.
Careful what you wish for.
A blessing in disguise.
Use whichever idiom you like; the fact remains we were even more exposed than we were when we got promoted. Cue transfer market overdrive. Again.
The difference is that by hook or by crook, in previous years it worked. Lots of misses, lots of debris, but it worked. We stayed up and we got into Europe ffs.
The issue this season was that, for the first time during this adventure, we were fishing in a different pond. Not quite at the front of the queue but definitely not living off the top 6’s scraps.
We needed stability, 3/4 oven ready PL players in certain positions, plus a few development players to flip for a profit. Specifically, we needed full backs, a no9 and pace up front.
In comes Edu.
Immediately falls out with Nuno who the fans and players loved.
Oversees the biggest spend in the clubs history, misses quality where we need it and here we are.
4 managers deep and none of them trusting the majority of the new signings; so much so, that when Wood is fit I can see us starting with 11 players who were here last season.
Yes, EM was at fault.
Yes, Nuno was too.
But, assuming he was actually in charge of recruitment, even the most left wing union representatives couldn’t defend Edu’s job performance at the HR meeting.
We failed to step up to the next level. A job he was brought in to oversee.
Turn the lights out on your way out, Eddie.
Let’s hope Vitor gets us to limp over the line, because root and brand reform is needed in the summer.
