I have thought about this overnight and have come to the conclusion that a move is probably the right thing to do. I doubt very much I will be around when the club does move.
The club announced plans to rebuild the PT stand 5 years ago and it has taken that long to get to this stage. For a complete new stadium to be built, the club need to find the right location. I do not think Toton is the right place. It is nearly as close to Derby than it is to Nottingham!! Then the land will have to be purchased, along with all of the necessary surveys, consultations for transport links, infrastructure, amenities, local impact etc etc. Then the place has got to be built. A high end quality stadium could take 5 or more years to be constructed. Finance will have to be found. I very much doubt even EM would plough in almost a £1B of his own wealth into the project (Evertons ground is reportedly costing over £900M so far, although there were some major obstacles that had to be overcome). I honestly cant see the club leaving for a new site within the next 10 years TBH.
By then, I will be frail and old, if not dead. I wont be going to matches anymore then, or at least I doubt I will!! But our younger generations will and we have got to think about them and their families and future generations. IF a move will place us in a better position to become a potent force in the PL and we once again become a force to be reckoned with both domestically and on the international stage, then we have no choice.
We could stay at the City Ground and stay as we are, but honestly, do any of you want to go through some of the shit we have had to endure over the past two seasons on a regular basis? However, if we do move sites but the playing side of things doesn't improve, we are going to be stuck in a very big stadium with only half of the seats taken back in the Championship or worse. Big risk!
A new ground will also offer additional revenue from other sources, i.e conferencing suites, on site amenities etc. The club simply has to look at ways to engage the stadium to its maximum potential. That is not a choice, it is a necessity.
So after careful thoughts and deliberations, I think a move is the only viable option that will take the club forwards to where it wants to be. Just not at Toton!
