DJ knows that the lower the fee the more chance he has of getting a higher wage and signing on bonus; that is why he is demanding such a ridiculously low release clause. He would have no sooner signed the new deal and then be off again. He may well do, I would be surprised if Ranieri doesn't want to have a look at him. We may well be making plans should BJ be sold but if we don't sell until 31 January then Plan A, B or C may no longer be available. It's a terrible strategy and one that should be avoided at all costs, otherwise we could end up with another Da Costa in his place. Its interesting that this 8m figure has been leaked, and the timing of it, I'm assuming to apply pressure on DJ from the fanbase via social media and flush out where he actually stands. Well I'm right behind the club on this one if they have leaked this out. No way should a 20 year old be dictating such terms. Fair enough, negotiate for a decent wage, but imo on his first major contract he has no right to be dictating the terms of a release clause and certainly not a cut price one that would effectively give him the option of choosing to move at any time he wants, rather than when the club feel they need to move him on. You either want to play for the club or you don't. Sounds like he doesn't to me. RE: Brennan Johnson - ozzyten10 - 02-11-2021 My point earlier that this isn’t down to BJ dictating terms but his dad who knows a bit about the pitfalls of being a player and needing to maximise his earnings. I don’t like it and from a fan point of view agree with all that has been said regarding holding the club to ransom. However it works both ways- I wonder what Alvin Appiahs family think? If it was my son I’m not sure I would be rushing to sign a contract that limited his next move. Hope it gets sorted one way or another and we see BJ for a few seasons help spearhead an assault on the premiership. Realistically I think we just need to enjoy watching him whilst we have him… RE: Brennan Johnson - DR Forest - 02-11-2021 Out of interest, I wonder if anyone can confirm whether something i heard years ago is actually true? I was told that DJ used to represent Lascalles and there was a right falling out with the club whilst DJ was only 'looking after his interests' which resulted in him getting turfed out on his ear and ended up with Lascelles getting a new agent (agency). Strangely, he then got a move to Newcastle shortly after without the manager knowing (via Fawaz). Maybe its utter BS, chinese whispers or true.... but we all love a bit of goss so thought I'd mention it. RE: Brennan Johnson - ozzyten10 - 03-11-2021 Everton were reported for tapping up our academy players a few years back… RE: Brennan Johnson - optimistic_red - 03-11-2021 (02-11-2021, 05:41 PM)ozzyten10 Wrote: My point earlier that this isn’t down to BJ dictating terms but his dad who knows a bit about the pitfalls of being a player and needing to maximise his earnings. I do understand you point about the Johnsons having to look after their own interests. Signing the contract will only limit their options for the length of the contract. Both parties need to get round the table as a new contract can be beneficial to both. BJ gets more money as soon as he signs. Forest get protection that asset isn't going to leave on the cheap. Can they think slightly outside the box, so that the release clause goes up a set amount with appearances/goals/assists etc. RE: Brennan Johnson - GaribaldiRED - 03-11-2021 If the buy out clause at 8m is correct then we should not sign any new contract with Brennan. That is an unrealistically low market value for Brennan already now. We should at least be looking at 12m in January and possibly even more. RE: Brennan Johnson - GaribaldiRED - 03-11-2021 Brennan demanding a release clause of 8m is more or less the same as saying that he will not sign a new contract. I think the only chance of him signing a new contract, is if the right money is not on the table in Jan. I would guess that it will be on the table unfortunately. You don’t need to be an expert to know the Brennan is a Prem league star in the waiting. He’s got everything needed to play at a very high level. The Johnsons have no point whatsoever. Brennan has been the beneficiary of top class development afforded to him by the Academy. The very same Academy which is funded by the sale of promising young talent which came before him; his sale, when it comes, will fund the players who are just entering the development pipeline. This needs to be called out for what it is, naked greed. Brennan will be set for life if he is sold for 8m or 12m or whatever; the club should not cave in to his demands. If he has not signed a new deal by the end of the year, sell him in January. |
