For anyone that doesn't have it, the gist is that he lost a child around the time of his contract ending and didn't want to move his partner away from her family. Forest didn't offer him a new deal so he took one at Derby, so he they could stay close to family. Poor guy.

I was as vocal in my criticism as anyone at the time.
But there are two sides to every story.
Whether he signed a pre agreement with that lot down the A52 or not he & his partner had a decision to make.
In the horrible circumstances that he found himself in I understand why he came to the decision.
We may not like it - but I do understand.

The FA put a stop to the 6 Month pre contract arrangement so that players moving to Clubs in the same League avoided any conflict of interest.
Commons claims to have signed a pre contract deal in May; that would be correct because a pre contract signed any earlier would not be worth the paper it was written on.
Another example of how it works was when Kelvin Wilson signed a pre contract deal with Celtic in the January prior to him leaving in June; two clubs in different National leagues and the 6 month pre contract is fine..

Just repeating what I was told by (1) a senior individual at NFFC and (2) an advisor at Derby. Just what I heard mate from two people I know well.

"Pay them" wasn't an option for the reasons previously stated and we felt it was better value to have him running his contract down but making a contribution to the team rather than selling him for diddly in the January.
From a financial perspective that was completely the right thing to do as he played a part in getting us promoted and the financial benefit in doing so eroded any upside in selling him for diddly in the January.

The point was not that they didn't pay him that summer, it was letting the contract situation reach that stage. Perhaps in this instance he offered more value to keep and let contract run down rather than pay him but this is rarely the case.
At worst if you sell before it's too late you get a decent fee that allows you the opportunity to reinvest elsewhere. You're not considering the opportunity cost of not playing him, another player will have got game time and therefore have an increased value, perhaps an academy player. Basically it rarely makes financial sense to run a contract down unless they reach that point of insignificant value at the exact point it expires.
Perhaps in this case we had reached that point, it was a while ago I can't really remember how good he was in the preceding years. Either way well run clubs don't let good players leave on frees. Maybe it doesn't apply as much here but there were plenty of other instances where we lost good players who would've otherwise commanded a decent fee.

There's a bit from David Ornstein in The Athletic today, saying that Vrentzos' father-in-law and Dourekas' are both doing voluntary jobs around the club.

Vrentzos, we can reveal, has brought in his father-in-law, who has uprooted from Greece, to take on a role as facilities manager, based at the training ground.
Kyriakos Dourekas, the director of football, is also keeping it in the family. Dourekas, regarded as the eyes and ears for Marinakis at the training ground, has been joined by his son in the analysis department.
Forest say they are voluntary and unpaid roles.
