I remember after Dave Bassett brought in his £12 million spending spree.

The 1st game of the season.  Or the earliest one I remember.  Vs Norwich.

Forest went at them with energy.  Aggression.  Attack!

I normally use the 'Calderwood' benchmark of 'ten games' to see a pattern.

In fairness.  Not all signings are available at once.  6 players have been brought in.  With another 3-4 (likely) to be brought in. It's going to take a while to get rid of that ghost from last season.

Today is far from the final solution. We didn't see Freeman from the start. He's another, like Colback who has not played a lot of football in the last year.

Missing players like Colback and Sow (if his knee needs treatment...I hope Forest get on with it.)

But an embarrassing cup exit to Barnie.  I hate leaving the cup competition early.

Forest don't seem ready.  But there's more to come in terms of getting the team ready and bringing in the quality needed to beat the likes of Barnie.

It rubs salt in the wounds to lose to bloody Barnie again.

Like Fray says. End of September. We should see something more like what the Coach wants.

It’s always hard to judge a team from cup games, with all the squad rotation etc.

I reckon we will see a very different team next weekend.

Exactly. £12m spending spree to add to a team that just got relegated. Not spent hardly anything and sold best player from a squad that's been second tier for nigh on a dozen years. Absolutely absurd comparison.

I'm glad that we can remember that.  I remember us battering Norwich that day.  It gives you momentum.

Confidence.

Need some real quality in several positions.

Laws makes the point that the end to the season knocked the stuffing out of the team and probably club.  Need to shift that albatross by winning.

Need to bring in some creative talisman or two.

Awful that was. No patterns of play, ponderous in midfield, isolated centre forwards, lack of pressing from the front, weak tackles, poor first touches. You can put some of it down to early games and rustiness but we need a big improvement of Sabri persists with low possession.
The new midfielder wasn’t great - some really poor decisions and goes to ground too easy. Colback will improve the midfield. Carvalho really needs to be in a team that has the ball.
Distribution from the back was so poor. Riberio was so rusty. Gabriel did OK.
Da Costa probably our best player and I’d only give him a 6/10.

Da costa didn't create any chances or really look like he would. Running around fast with the odd nice touch doesnt make him good. Its not like he was constantly threatening to play a nice ball or make a great run either. 

Carvalho looked solid, made some interceptions and played some decent forward passes.

Not absurd at all.  Forest were down and out when they got relegated.

Forest were never a rich club.  But they'd make signings of real class in key positions.  Bassett understood this division.  And the style of play needed to get out of it.  And the kind of signings to get out of it.  That you need to battle to get out of it.

Today's performance was.  Absurd.  Against Barnie at that.

We may not have been the richest back then, but we were absolutely rolling in money compared to where we are now. Nostalgia is fine but we can only live in the here and now, and in 2020 Forest aren’t even one of the top 10 biggest clubs in the Championship in financial terms. 

We often lose at Barnsley. Hardly a surprise.
