It will take at least two more windows to transition. This was never going to be a perfect Summer with millions spent on several signings in (3 million on LB? No.) a slow market where clubs won't let go unless they ream you on a player's value. We're moving to a new structure on wages and have our valuation of players.
We can't have it both ways.

Brereton's not a bad signing though. He's several years younger than Carvalho, and is already establishing himself way more.

Few clubs have made as many bad signings as us over the past few years. The hit rate has been woeful, the money spent on some of those players shocking, and the overall strategy abysmal. It's largely why we are relegation fodder.
Our recruitment nearly got Forest into the play offs under Aitor and Sabri. It's not like it was 'all' bad. But the lack of contingency planning and the abrupt transitions from managers in better position than we know sit and poor recruitment rate have finally played out on the pitch with Hughton's hands pretty much tied for the last year. (eg. MoN and Keane probably knew how it was but the club didn't want to listen so their position became untenable. But clearly the hierarchy at Forest knew better and almost got relegated last season and now we sit bottom. It's been coming for a long, long time.)
We still haven't got a successor to Grabban and the attempts at getting on have proved half hearted at best. It doesn't have to be millions and millions. But we do need to recruit one. And it needs to be quality. Other teams can do it who are far less resources than Forest.
Yeah, he's doing alright now, Brereton? He's maturing. Coming along nicely.
We're not at the point where we can keep players when good money comes a calling.
Though, that said, we kept Worrall and Brennan (because valuations weren't met.)

Good points SA. For me Sabri nearly got us to the playoffs by getting the most out of a team & system (look at the difference in Watson from previous years). The recruitment was largely average-poor. But they did at least snag a few OK players too. But would you want another 70-odd players through the door, and bloated wage bill, for the handful of decent signings they did make? I wouldn't. I'm not sure Dane would either.
I agree that 7m was good money for BB, my point was that few clubs sign as many duds as we have. Paplane was using BB as an example of Blackburn fans signing duds. But he's improved far more and far quicker than Carvalho has, or looks likely too sadly.
As you say, hopefully a lot of that is hopefully in the past now. Vrentzos is clearly an excellent accountant and negotiator. If Dane involves him in that capacity then that's cool. Having him involved in recruitment and sourcing players however feels like playing Steve Stone as a center forward. If he sticks to what he's good at, we'll all be better off for it.
Fingers crossed we see an upturn in results sooner rather than later with these new players. Personally, I think it's a step in the right direction, but there needs to be a lot of eyes on Jan too.

How many of those signings have we sold on for a sizeable profit though? Also, it's OK dismissing loans as if we don't pay them wages, but we do. Not to mention loan fees. Taylor himself says Diakhaby's oan fee was "sizeable"
And I think the fact that out of the permeant signings 4 of them cost 20m (Carvalho, Jenks, Da Costa & Soudani) is more damning though. We allegedly got some money back for Soudani, so strike him off the list and that's still 17m in transfer fees alone flushed straight down the toilet.
Overall it has been nothing short of an utter disaster IMO, and is one of the prime reasons why the club's now in such a mess.
