Seeing as it looks like Deadline Day is going to be a busy one, here's a theoretical question for you all.

We all loved last year's squad and it'll never be forgotten because of what it achieved. However, football is a cutthroat world as we all know. So here's the question:

Would you be happy if we sold or never played again all of last year's squad if it meant we stayed up this season?

I'm sorry to say it but staying up is the reason we wanted to go up in the first place. Players come and go but Forest lives on and will be here long after me for my children and others to enjoy. If the players aren't good enough to play in the top division then we need to move them on not only for ourselves but for them as well.

100%
no room for sentiment, if players aren’t good enough for where we want to get to then that’s the way it has to be.
It’s clear our owners are ambitious and have backed us very well this summer.

I think there is a clear realisation that 90% of last seasons squad was not at the right level

9 times out of 10 players don't hesitate to take a better deal elsewhere, we as fans should hold the same sentiment.

If a better player becomes available for a position, go for it.

Well there's only 4 of them anyway, Worrall, McKenna, Yates and Brennan. Is 5 games enough to judge whether any of them will make it as premier league players? What's to say some random signing from abroad is anymore likely to succeed?

I'm not against improving the team if we can sign players that are clearly better ie Lodi though.

Of course it is results.

The question many of us are raising is whether we have thrown the baby out with the bathwater. Regardless of their quality what we undoubtedly had last season was an unbelievable team spirit. The loans all seemed to bring enthusiasm and character, the Nottingham raised spine of the team which we have kept and the old pros such as Grabban Colback and even Bong made the team gel.

So is what we have brought in really better?
Is Mangala better than Garner?
Is Dennis better than Davis?
Is Taiwo better than Grabban?
Is Kouyate better than Colback?
Is Lingard that much better than Zinc?
Is Lodi better than Bong? (OK Im joking now)

Ultimately we have added much needed squad depth and without doubt some of the additions look quality. But are all of them necessary and should we have worked harder to retain some of last years team?
Have we diluted the team spirit that got us here with some overpaid egos and potentially some unhappy players who were sold a dream but in reality are looking at very limited game time?
Therefore is the main question more “would we stand a better chance of staying up with last years squad?”

No Mangala is not better than Garner (although irritatingly Garner was not made available until we'd signed a million CMs)
Dennis is not better than Davis from what I've seen (although perhaps less of an injury risk. Has Davis even played for Watford yet?)
Taiwo is better than Grabban
Kouyate is similar to Colback
Lingard is much better than Zinc and will get better as he gets fitter
Hahaha Bong, Lodi looked good last night I thought.

I think once we have a final squad we can start to rebuild that unity properly and gel. Whilst signing millions of players was clearly at least somewhat necessary, we always knew it would take time to gel. Just got to try and scrap out some results until that point.

I would say I was surprised how good we looked vs Spurs and at times vs Everton. Lodi is very much something we haven't had so far, should open up the left side and maybe allow more space for Brennan/Neco on the other side. I'm still optimistic, one thing about this thread that is interesting. We're essentially focussed on the two defenders and Yates here right? Brennan has looked our best attacker. However the attacking side of the game is the bit that looks more concerning to me, can that front three of MGW, Brennan and Lingard score enough goals? Think the defence will be fine whatever iteration we go for, Worrall and McKenna looked good in some games and less so in others. Having pace of Lodi to support on the left will help too.

In answer to your last question, emphatically, no.

^ to clarify I mean last years squad with say 10 additions rather than binning last years squad and adding 20.

Staying in the PL is everything at any cost.

There should be no sentiment in my opinion.

I think we all agree with that really, it's more about the best approach to actually do that.

Ie keep more from last year to provide continuity/knowledge of the system vs trying to field the best team possible and hoping they learn quickly.

Football is a collectivist endeavour. It is about the team and not the individual. There is no room for sentiment.
