What Positions Do We Need To Strengthen Most?

With the transfer window soon to open, what positions should we prioritise? A striker is the obvious one but above this position, where are we most lacking?
For me, any incoming players must be forward thinking. We are okay at the back (though we are missing Ribiero badly) but are not scoring enough to get promoted.

We need a target man/ striker, a wide player with pace and an attacking midfielder who can pick a pass. Also the old left back problem seems to be re-emerging.

Well, yes.  But why would Forest's pedestrian midfield break the habit of 20 years?

The Coach even hinted recently that there were not enough options on the bench to change things vs Sheff Wed'.

Can't disagree with any of that really. 4 positions needed with better than we already have rather than squad players and a good spare striker, if that happens we will be pushing the top 2 all the way.

Priorities are the same as they (should) have been for the past 18 months (in no order):

Attributes: Pace + Height + Creativity

Positions:
Winger
Backup/2nd striker + target man
Energetic, powerful box to box midfielder

If I had to chose 1 out of all those it would actually be a 2nd striker + target man. Adomah + Target man coming off the bench gives us a game changing option as Adomah can cross, target man should be able to score. Plus then we can switch the midfield around so we play to our strengths - a defensive unit designed to win the ball back as we hoof it long & play the percentages. Not pretty, but that's what we're good at & adding players who allow us to be better at that would be step 1 IMO.

But we need all 3 to be realistically in with a shout of promotion. Pace would add a whole new dimension to us too and could be just as influential.

^completely agree, if we only sign one or two that improve the team I will take that over five or six in the mould of Adomah, Jenkinson, Chema, etc.

Buying players in the summer compared to January are two completely different tasks.

When buying in the summer you have time to get the new players integrated into the club and team. In that sense you can take bigger risks. When buying in January you unfortunately don't have that luxury. Players need to perform more or less straight away if they are to have a significant impact. From that perspective going for proven Championship or PL players would be the preferred option. Going for young foreign talent with a lot of potential is probably not the smartest thing to do in January.

And it's all about quality now and I believe the decision makers at Forest are very well aware of that.

Except from the obvious, striker and a pacy winger, I agree with Alf that we need some energy and physicality in the midfield area. This is exactly what Sow gives us, but unfortunately his injury record tells us that we can't rely entirely on him for the rest of the season. 

I've been paying attention to his movement and the way he runs, and it's really smart, something both Yates and Semedo lack - probably mostly due to lack of experience. 

In my opinion the reason Wigan dominated us was that our midfield was all over the place. I think it was their center half, who just walked the ball straight through our midfield without anybody closing him down in the first half. Way to easy. To often shitty teams over run our midfield. It's been a problem for years now, in my opinion. 

I also think we need a player who can put a quality cross into the box on a regular basic. The way Lamouchi sets up our team, this mainly comes from our full backs. And too often the quality is poor on the crosses they put in, maybe with the exception of Ribeiro..
