Champions League - Europa League - Conference League
Even though way may not need the extra UCL space to enter the competition we’d probably be in pot 4 because we haven’t been in Europe for 30 years. So let’s run a hypothetical based on who Aston Villa faced.

Game one: Servette or Basel (winners of the Swiss super league) (pot 4)
Game two: Leverkusen (3rd in Bundesliga (Mainz wouldn’t be in pot 1) (pot 1)
Game three: Lazio (5th in Serie A)  (pot 2)
Game four: Anderlecht (4th in pro league) (pot 4)
Because of their co-efficient lazio would probably be in pot 2 and anderlecht pot 4 not the other way round
Game five: Atalanta (3rd in Serie A) (pot 2)
Game six: Frankfurt (4th in Bundesliga) (pot 1)
Game seven: Marseille (2nd in Ligue 1) (pot 3)
Game eight: Celtic (1st in Scots Prem) (pot 3)

We’ve never played Basel or Servette or Leverkusen or Lazio or Atalanta or Marseille
Last played anderlecht in April 1984…
Last played Frankfurt in a friendly summer of 2023
Last played Celtic in December 1983

Is it not likely we would have to play in a least one of the qualifying rounds first? There are potentially 2 rounds followed by a play off before you get to the CL group stage.
Whether you go directly into the group stage is determined by the UEFA coefficient which seems nebulous at best. Qualifying starts mid to late July which buggers up pre season.

Its one of the reasons Im not convinced about the CL, a bit of a damp squib if we do all the hard work to finish top 5 and the dream is over in July after a tonking by Slovan Bratislava.

Better make sure we finish top four then!

If we *were* to finish fifth does anyone know if that *would* be automatic qualification for the league stage? I'm presuming top four would be. Don't know what happened with the fifth German and Italian (I think it was) teams this season.

Yep it is automatic qualification.

What makes you say that?
As stated it works on the UEFA club coefficient for which we don’t currently have a ranking.
I would say its highly likely we would have to qualify.

There's nothing to worry about fellow reds! We're going to finish 3rd anyway so we'll automatically qualify. What's all this 5th place nonsense?!?

Admire your optimism. Not meaning to be miserable just don’t like having hopes crushed. Not sure exactly how it works, does 3rd or 4th automatically get group stage or is that about the coefficient too?
If knocked out in CL qualifying you still go to Europa but may have to do a play off tie for that too. Its very confusing!

I personally have no idea and can't be arsed to look. What will be, will be.

Right now, I genuinely think we will finish top 4, though this is based on my hope that Newcastle don't get a result tonight and we do beat Ipswich, which is absolutely not a given. If those things happen, then for me, it will require a big bottle job not to accumulate enough points to finish top 4.

Both Villa and Newcastle have qualified recently for the champions league, having never played in it previously. Did they both have to qualify?

No premier league spots automatically get into the league phase based on the national co-efficient and were also getting that extra spot because of the combined club co-efficient it’s called the European performance spot and it also is automatically in the league phase

We having had no European football will be in pot 4 whether we finish 2nd-5th

Now it the holders of the ucl and europa league also automatically get into the league phase so there clild be extra places
