We've been pretty awful with 4-2-3-1 at times also. Agree it didn't work yesterday though lacked creativity but most worring was apparent lack of energy also. Looked very subdued.

I can see why Martin used a 442 yesterday but I will be surprised if we see it again.
He had only 2 or 3 training sessions with the players. I think we will see a different team and a different formation against Wigan on Saturday.
COYR!

No but it was coherent football played with a degree of sophistication. I accept it wasnt always great but i could see progress being made. Ive not given up on MON after 1 game and I think he can do good for us but he hasn't got time to mess about and i cant see why he felt the need to change to 442 after being with the players for 2 days. Surely the better appraoch would have been to stick with AKs shape and have a look at it?

And despite the shape, i thought Carvalho could have come on for either Murphy or Grabban and linked up play between the midfield and the striker.
It was disappointing that he wasnt given a chance when both strikers were struggling.

I listened to MON's post match interview this morning and have to say was enthused a little by it. He said the players thought that there were too few attackers in the box (under AKs shape) and the 442 was a response to that. So fair enough i supppse.
He also said he would look at it for next saturday.

We were at home in front of a full house, Martin wanted the team to get on the front foot from the off, hence two upfront and a 442.
I can understand that given the build up to the game and the week he and the team had. Next week will be different, he now has a full week to work with and get to know the players better plus one or two more will be available for selection next week. Expect a different team and formation for Wigan. I am not reading anything into yesterdays team, formation or result.

Lolleys game has fallen off a cliff. Wouldnt be suprised if there are off the field issues influencing that. He was electric up to and including the villa game then, nothing.
If i were cynical then i d suggest that hes keeping himself fit and healthy so hes ready for a big money move.

In which case just contrast the system that Lee Johnson employed yesterday - they regularly got 4 & 5 players into our box ( playing away from home ).

His career so far suggests that he is a player who has runs, both good and bad, we’ve seen both so far and that’s why he struggled to cement his place in the Team early on this season. I don’t think it’s anything more sinister than that, it’s just that’s Joe Lolley. |
