Right I get what you are saying but having 2 big injuries, in less than a year is bad for Forest financially if we were to offer a new contract it has to be on significantly reduced terms. That’s what I was trying to point out. So ‘having to question the common sense of some people’ is an unneeded comment.
It is absolutely needed comment.
We have largely breached P&S due to the onerous and unnecessary contracts we have entered into. We can't keep touching an electrified fence and expect a different outcome.
I'll repeat, Chris Wood has played 28 games this season when selected, twice as many as Ola Aina.
I'm not really sure what argument you're making here? Who is not showing common sense?
People suggesting Wood shouldn't sign a new contract or Forest for overusing him/not having an alternative?
Also Wood has played 24 games not 28. Aina also has missed 6 so far due to AFCON which presumably he'd have played in so it's not really a great comparison. Aina is also 27 and I would imagine on significantly lower wages.
If it is the suggestion that keeping Wood is a mistake due to injuries I think it's a perfectly reasonable debate. Wood is 32 and going to need a sizeable pay cut and likely to want more than 1 year on his contract. We've burned ourselves plenty of times in this exact scenario. Obviously if he's willing to take a short deal that reflects his value and is weighted on incentives then I'm sure everyone would be delighted. However, assuming he's gonna want one more payday and a longer deal I suspect it'll be tricky. Certainly a debate either way!
I can’t see Wood getting a new contract. he has done better this season than i anticipated but i reckon each goal he has scored has cost about £3.5 million. we need to find better value for money.
That's the thing though, we keep him for a couple more years with no transfer fee and that cost per goal goes down quickly (assuming he continues to score).
I would definitely keep him. Think he has a couple of good years left - I think the mix we have now is good....star striker that is injury prone, older professional (who has scored at an exceptional mins per goal this season when called upon) and a young up and coming striker. This is the perfect scenario for me.

I presume we will keep Awoniyi so we can't afford to have two injury prone Strikers in a 25 man squad.
Aina is a no brainer.
How about we sell Awoniyi for £40m and give Wood another year on reduced terms?
Well there is always that option too.
Ha Awoniyi is worth more than 40m but also what a strange decision that would be. Sell our star striker so we could keep a 32 year old journeyman striker for another two years? Doesn't seem like a smart play (unless we're in the championship of course)
Yes I agree Wassy that it would be strange plus it would annoy me too. I was just making the point that the option is there.

I obviously don’t know the man but I feel he would be the kinds of guy to look at reduced weekly wage, and like I said somewhere else we pad that out with app and goal/assist bonuses

Yep that is the option and sadly one we have made far too often over the last 25 years (since way before Marinakis).
What I want to see going forward is the continued investment in players that grow in value, the odd wheeling and dealing like we did with Managala but not then burning the profit on someone after a last pay day.
Of course if young Rodders scores 15 between now and the end of the season and we decide to keep him and sell Awoniyi thats a different matter entirely.

That is an option but can you imagine the meltdown if that were to happen and criticism that would be aimed at our recruitment team and ownership by some.

There is talk of offering Aina a new contract but not one to Wood. That makes no sense financially. The better way to measure their value to the team is the contract length per annum against minutes played and then their stats within those minutes.
Wood's contribution this season is clear and measurable, less so for Aina, simply due to his lack of minutes. I would also question how Aina has gone from struggling with fitness for us to pretty much playing five games in 19 days for Nigeria.
To work within the P&S Rules you have to have a greater percentage of the 25 man squad available than we have this season. We can't carry the likes of Aina and Felipe because they occassionally perform. There has to be a mindset change here otherwise you end up with situations where we have two goalkeepers on the bench or no recognised striker available for an important cup tie.
Apologies, you were correct on the 24 games rather than 28, I had included his four appearances for NZ.

By the way Awoniyi has 15 PL goals to his name. Decent goals to games ratio but quite a few injuries now and rarely lasts beyond an hour in a game (think Sunday was the first time he has played 90?)
Don’t think he has done enough to merit a £40m move. We may get an offer of £25m or so with significant add ons.

Do you really think someone will pay more than £40m for him?
He is nowhere near the finished article and has missed two substantive periods of football through injury. I suspect that from the outside looking in that he is seen to be a risk, hence why Chelsea ultimately went elsewhere.
As it stands we need to sell players at the height of their value to operate within P&S to enable continual investment and growth in the squad.

£3.5 million per goal would equal £35 million.
How many players out there can we acquire for £35m, that are available right now and would come to us in the position we are in? I'm genuinely interested to know what the alternatives are that would guarantee the same return or better.
