Should We Buy A New Goalkeeper?
#61
In my book there's 4 basic talents required to be a good goalkeeper: 1) shot stopping 2) Aerial dominance 3) Kicking 4) Composure under pressure

His kicking appeared to be less poor on Monday because he was just punting it down field. It's when he tries to actually pick out a pass and distribute that he has issues.

He's dire when he's put under pressure from crosses, Derby didn't do that on Monday. Millwall did and he lost the plot completely.

So it's down to his shot stopping ability. I don't have a problem there but to be honest I've not noticed him being extra-ordinary at that either. In fact I'd say Smith has better talent in that regard.

Im not sure your 4 basic talents are in coaching manuals but yes theat is pretty much what spectators see. I would also add No.5 Organise the defence.

I would say Pants is pretty average at most things, I actually dont think his distribution is as bad as people make out. The case for the prosecution would refer me to the last kick of Monday night’s game though!

I agree with you on Jordan Smith, I think he has been unfairly sidelined and would like to see him get another chance.

I agree with you both. Smith should get another chance.

What a liability Pantilimon is.

Have we ever had a worse goalkeeper than him?

Seriously?

Shocking.
Panic on the streets of Croydon, Derby, Sheffield, Leicestershire.

Barry Roche and Marco Pascolo to name two. But yes, he's been poor today.

We do need to splash the cash on a goalkeeper

We need a keeper more than anything else right now, Pants is turning into a joke tbh.

Yep has to be priority, so many goals this season that have gone in where I’ve thought he either could’ve saved them or where he was just in the wrong place. Norwich 2nd goal went through him and today he just dived over it. Would’ve saved it if he’d stood still

Rune Pederson, Paul Smith, Pascolo and Roche as already mentioned and plenty more I have erased from my memory.

Pants is bang average, i admit I screamed at him when he stayed rooted to the spot for a cross though. He is OK but a promotion winning team should have better than OK.

First goal was soft. Don't think he's awful, just very "meh". Would be happy with him as the backup keeper, but would like better as our number 1 each week.

Week after week, I hope that he is going to prove me wrong, come out, claim a few crosses early doors and relieve pressure on the defence, especially against big sides...but he never does. He is massive, yet always stays rooted to his line. He made a big save just after we went 4-2 up today, but I would expect any half-decent keeper to do better on their first goal.
To be fair, I think most decent Champ sides think they need a better keeper than they have at the moment. Having a Butland-type at this level is very much the exception rather than the norm.

Very good today I thought. The goals against weren’t great especially the first bitsome good saves. His size means that he looks routine in all he does - kicking is awful though.
