Brice Samba
His distribution since Cooper came in has improved 10 fold. More progressive movement from the whole team has helped in this regard.
I think the 4231 straight jacket we have been in since Karanka (with only slight deviations by Sabri and O’Neil) has been our downfall for so long. Interestingly when we now use it, it is a more progress version for when we are chasing a game.

The question for me is are we really moving into a 4-2-3-1 formation or is more of a 2-4-3-1 set-up? Against Bristol I think it was more of a 2-4-3-1 as we didn't pull back the wing backs. And Brice push up and played almost the same role as Figs when in possession.

Interesting observation Gari.

If we do use this formation regularly though, Brice has got to be mindful of someone taking a long punt from the halfway line, like the Bristol player tried on Tuesday night. We only just got away with that one as the ball was only about a foot too high when it cleared the crossbar!

It will leave you a bit more exposed at the back but then again the reward could be so much more than the risk you take on. It proved to work against Bristol.

Don't get me wrong Gari, I'm not suggesting we shouldn't deploy that formation, just Brice has got to be switched on and drop back if we lose possession higher up the pitch

Yeah agreed, taking more risks in general is how you play more attacking. Hughton's complete unwillingness to allow any risks was his downfall, I'd rather concede one random long range goal but gain an advantage in another 5-10 games because of it for example.

As long as you don't take it too far ala Warbs time where it felt like we were taking risks with the keeper just for the sake of it with no reward but lots of risk!

Totally agree Tricky but it is a risk reward kind of scenario and it is just great that we now have a manager/head coach that isn't terrified at taking on some additional risk if the reward is greater.

A break glass in case of emergencies formation?

the application of tactics and introduction of subs has been brilliant, after 100's of games of little to no impact tweaks or changes, but the way the team, even right back to Brice in goal were deployed to squeeze, win possession and turn Bristol was something, that was probably the best game management adn Brice stroked the ball around beautifully at the back, awesome

Just to be clear in my opinion Samba is easily the best goalkeeper in our league and could step up to the premier no problem and when some keepers are priced worldwide at £70-80 million he is a snip at under £2,million

Would probably say Sam Johnstone is the best in Championship by some margin, but is only keeper I'd definitely swop Samba for in our division.  TBF with WBA yoyo existence, Johnstone is as much a Prem keeper as he is Championship.

In terms of Championship keepers over 2 and a bit seasons, Samba certainly one of the best.

Alex Smithies is decent, Joe Lumley also looks good. Freddie Woodman was very good, but being on loan from Prem doesn't count. Most of the rest are up and down,  then there are the Sheep debacle. Their best keeper is 3rd choice for financial reasons, the other two are awful.
