Thoughts On The Next Nottingham Forest Manager
Stolen from elsewhere

Tails is currently doing a Q&A on The Athletic:

Q: "With Chris Wilder apparently both willing to come to the club and work with Murphy on transfers is there any news about why he is being overlooked?"

A: "Don't believe he has ever been on the Forest shortlist. In fact, we are pretty certain that he hasn't.
Forest want certain things out of their next appointment, as they look to implement a very specific philosophy at the City Ground.
They want to build a young, ambitious squad that will grow and improve together while, in theory, only increasing in value.
They want players who are investments, rather than coming towards the end of their careers.
And they want a manager who can help those young men to grow and evolve.
The job Wilder did at Sheffield United was brilliant. Outstanding, in fact.
But Cooper does tick more of those boxes than Wilder does.
In fact, on paper, he is a very good fit for Forest.
He worked with players like Mighten and Johnson (before he switched to Wales) in the England under-17 set-up.
He has a lot of great contacts when it comes to securing the very best young players on loan, from Premier League clubs (which will be an advantage to any Championship side moving forward).
I completely understand that Wilder would be a popular choice.
But one of the reasons he also left Sheffield United was because he did not agree with the club's recruitment policy.
They wanted to adopt an approach where much of the recruitment would be overseen by their recruitment team.
The manager would still have a significant say, but it would be a group effort overall.
Which is exactly the way Forest want to work, moving forward.
The next appointment will be head coach, rather than manager."

Q: "Will Dane Murphy be given full control of the new managerial appointment?

Any reason Steven Reid has been placed in temporary charge and not Andy Reid?"

A: "Dane Murphy has headed up the search for a new boss, yes.
He is back in America getting married (today actually, so good luck to him with that).
But that has not prevented him from being very hands on with the work towards appointing the next head coach.
The pursuit of Steve Cooper has been going on since before Murphy left the UK.
Somebody on Twitter contacted me more than once to demand to know who was making the appointment, as it 'obviously' couldn't be Murphy as he wasn't in the country.
I was proud of myself for not making some sarcastic quip about the existence of telephones...
And S Reid, rather than A Reid has been appointed because, unlike Andy (who is doing a brilliant job with the under-23 side), he has worked regularly with the first team.
He knows the players and they know him. I'm told he is quite well liked among the squad.
It is very likely to be only for one game. But hopefully he has enough understanding of the players to inspire a positive performance tomorrow."

Q: "Do you think there are any names under serious consideration other than Coopers or is it pretty much a certainty?"

A: "Cooper is the man that Forest want. There have been negotiations with Swansea over the compensation that would be required to secure his services, which we are told have gone well.
There has been a shortlist of targets, but he was always the one at the top of the list.
Unless something goes very awry with the final negotiations (and there is no suggestion of that) Cooper will be the next manager - sorry, head coach - of Nottingham Forest."

Extra bit: "The potential compensation fee for Cooper is nowhere near the figure that has been talked about in the media.
And the fact is that it suits Swansea to resolve the issue, because they are also still paying him.
The situation only came about because there was a fear that he was resigning so that he could walk straight into another job. But that was never the case.
He didn't have another job to go to when he left Swansea, he just felt it was the right time to depart.
Now he does have an opportunity, there would be no point in Swansea digging their heels in and demanding massive money. It sounds very amicable at this point, all round. I'd expect it to be resolved very quickly."

Q: "When looking for the next coach what would be all the parameters in meeting what DM is looking for.

1. Track record of developing players (both academy & signings)
2. Building team identity
3. Understanding & being able to work in modern football environment with recruitment and analysis.
4. Value of backroom staff and an understanding of training ground work

Any others?"

A: "Are you part of the recruitment panel?
The parameters you mention there are all pretty much identical to most of what we have been hearing in recent days.
Forest, on a basic level, want a modern, forward thinking head coach, who is willing and capable of embracing the fresh way of doing things in the game."

An interesting listen on the Forest situation, Hughton sacking and the potential replacement.

Interesting. Clear objectives, then.

Wonder who that might have been?  :D Does the guy ever let up with his tirade against Vrentzos?

There's a lot of positive stuff in there. Here's hoping it works.

I think in all our recent sackings (and there are a lot of them) this is honestly the least I've cared who gets appointed. I'd normally be following every article, checking the odds every 10 mins etc. Just feel really apathetic towards the team right now.

I'd rather someone that played a more attacking style (although our squad doesn't really have the ability for that) but whoever it is they'll probably get turned upon in a few weeks/months and eventually forced out in September next year.

Cooper whilst being boring has a good CV and has yet to be sacked so if it's a genuine long term appointment then it's a positive one albeit boring. I would just love to have the same bloke for 2-3 years without him necessarily having to have taken us up and without half the fans turning on him after a few weeks when they realise we're not suddenly going to be amazing.

Thank you Jurgen for that.

Me the same about a 2-3 year manager Wass. But to be fair to the club, the sacking of the last two managers was completely justified. Both men left the club with no option really. I thought we might get more of a kicking from the media re thr sacking of CH but all the coverage ive seen has been one of understanding he had to go, based on results.

Did anyone see that article the yesterday suggesting the colour of his skin was a factor in his sacking?

I can't see CH's colour being anything to do with the decision. When that is a factor it is with recruitment and that is an issue across football I think. Also can't see how race plays any part in such a dreadful run of results and therefore the consequence of that. I know you're not suggesting race was a factor Pap but it's just sad that someone prints garbage like that.

Always interesting to read an overview of Forest's exodus.

Whoever said that is 'reaching.'  Crass stuff.

When results and the football aren't good.  And fans are shouting dogs abuse the manager and board?  The inevitable happens.

Do I think Hughton was poorly backed?  Yes.  Came in following some crap recruitment.  Poor timing.  Poor recruitment.  A lost opportunity.  We never got the best out of him.

He was attritional.  But Hughton didn't employ himself?  Why employ attritional managers?  Who's making those appointments.  The last handful of managers have been attritional?

We'll see what the next appointment brings.  Dull ball, probably.

Of all those on that list the one that saddened me the most when he got booted was Stuart Pearce. We should have stuck with him. We were respected whilst he was our leader. Now we're not.
