Coventry City - Nottingham Forest
Can’t argue with the result. They looked better, a lot more possession, did more with the ball and looked more cohesive with it. Stats wise they had 64% possession, much more in the attacking part of the pitch, 6 shots on target to our 2, and they hit the woodwork.

Hard to lose so late on but on balance can’t argue with the score.

People having a go at Hughton really need to get a grip. This team are going to be far more offensive this season. Glan Murray talking at lot of sense on sky just now.

Lack of pre season threadbare squad

I saw that two weeks ago and yet here we are

Johnson put a few more thousands on his fee, can we hold onto him?

Its not an excuse though it is reality unfortunately, I agree it is pretty frustrating because we could all see the situation developing.

But what do you want to do? Make a load of panic signings? Bring Vrentzos back?

Be better prepared

They were doing pretty well pre-season until the disruption to the last two games of prep.

They've cleared the ground for signings.  That's preparation.

They've brought in a decent keeper and winger.  But Forest clearly needed 3-4 more.  eg. Light up front.  No left back.  Ball playing CM.  etc.

Not 1st half they didn't.

Forest also had a couple of chances to make it 2-0.

Cov' scored a couple of scruffy goals that Forest could have done better with.

A silver lining of today's performance?  Quite a few.

Gabriel did decently.  Soh gave the team composure.  That Brennan run to Taylor to slot in?  Showed that Brennan can do it at this level.  Had a shot on goal.  He gave Forest another dimension with his natural agility and quality.  If Forest score from Brennan's chance soon after.  Cov' sink.  Yates and Colback were solid 1st half.  PZ gave good delivery from the corner.  Lyle scored.  Mighten was a constant menace.

Forest's academy products (by and large) didn't let themselves down. Yates with the rush of blood towards the end helped sink Forest. Forest will need to bring in some quality players to nurture the the young guns.

The 1st goal DID come from two experienced players in Bong and Colback getting in a pickle...at LB. I'll concede that.

Let’s face it, we are going to be a mid table flop again, even with signings, we cannot afford a Messi or grealish so will settle for loaners and players other clubs don’t want, also  players looking to feather their bank accounts, and when we do make these signings it will be a case of “ give them time to gel” I see it every year as do many others. I think Ch  will go within 10 games and the merry go round will continue for another 10 years or so.

The match today, Hughton was dealt a bad hand, but I don’t like the way he played it. But that’s just how he plays it. It’s years old, inflexible and gets found out.

It’s why a few on here were questioning whether he is compatible with the new regime. Was it at 0-0 in the first half when the camera panned to Dane Murphy and he already looked far from impressed?

I’m much more optimistic than that. I think we have a strong nucleus of players. We finally seem to be adopting a good strategy to signing players, and have a CEO that wants to adopt a more progressive style of play.

If they get their signings over the line and bring in a good coach (sooner rather than later), I think this can be a good season.

I'm really not sure where people are getting we had the best of the first half from. I wasn't at the game but I did see it on sky and our only dangerous moment was the goal we scored and the rest they controlled. Moved us left right and all over the place. They dictated the play. Sure they didn't score but they looked dangerous on every attack. We just looked like a team who's game plan was hold tight and hope for the best. Not much in the team's sure but they were unlucky to go one down at the time. We need a lot of work and need to find a midfield central partnership that works.

The best team won they controlled the game for larger spells in both Half's and push on final 20 mins with a view to win when we just hoping not to lose. It happens and it is only the first game of the season so  let's see how we do over next few games.

I think that's a familiar feeling over the last two seasons.

But it's going to take some quality signings to get out of that mentality of conceding late in games.

A point away from home would have been fine.

Back to the training ground for Wednesday.

I'm a Yates fan, but his tackle was rash and put the result at risk.

Agreed, there's a good manager out of a job that had Swansea playing some good football.

I get that we don't want to make the same recruitment mistakes as we did previously but to go into first game, 3 months after end of season, relying on makeshift full backs, untried youth players and no replacement striker was asking for it, a lot to do in very little time now, so fingers crossed we aren't forced into panic buying again.

In seasons gone by this is 100% what we would do in the current situation, bring in a load of never beens, sack the manager in October and sell one of the academy players to pay for the inevitable failure.
Thats why I remain hopeful that changes in the heirarchy have been made to break that woeful cycle. To go back to what you suggest above would be utter disaster.

I’m a pessimist I admit. But today’s game followed every this manger had before him. Old fashioned outdated tactics. We will be lucky to stay up.
