What Is The Clubs Transfer Strategy

You are right Sniff - of course you are.

But the prime issue must lie at the top!

They appoint the coaching staff.

They are responsible for recruitment.

100% TPL.

There are some very strange things happening regarding recruitment. I can’t believe we are so naive regarding this.

We are now 3.5 years into the 5 yr plan EM and Vrentzos set out.

In that plan by the end of 2021/22 season we should be qualifying for Europe. The plan was that we would already be promoted (end of year 3).

As it stands we might be in Tier 3 at the 5th anniversary.

If Warburton, MON, Lamouchi have all been kicked out for poor performance, why hasn’t Vrentzos and Modesto been kicked out for shambolic recruitment.

If I was scoring them, they are 2/10.

To get promoted your recruitment needs to be 8 or 9 / 10

But there is light at the end of the tunnel, we have the likes of Mighten, Johnson, Swan, Mcguane and Konate coming through to go with McKenna, Yates, Mbe Soh. There is the spine of a decent young team there if we can hang on to them and shed some of the expensive dead wood.

This/\

I would love to watch a team containing a few more of those lads. Supported by likes of Sow/Colback/Grabban. I would also add Jake Taylor and Danny Preston into the mix.

It would certainly do alot for the wage bill if we followed The Paul Hart blueprint for a couple of seasons. Run down all the big contracts, offering extentions just to those who are key players when fit. Only bring in hungry young loan players if at all and then build from a position of strength.

Winning is entertaining. Losing is boring.

Attendances are dependent on where a club is in the league and/or the level of ambition the club is showing with new signings etc. Look at how our attendances shot up after these owners appointed Karanka and spent a few quid that summer. Yet the people who bang on about entertainment said his football was boring and the manager before him was entertaining. If attendances reflected ‘entertainment’ they would have gone down not up.

I get some people have a narrow idea of what makes football entertaining. For me the art of defending is just as entertaining as the art of attacking. People who’s idea of entertainment only involves scoring goals are often going to be disappointed watching football.

Was it a plan?

I think it was just a comment where they would ideally like to be not a plan as such.

Yeh that was the original 5 yr business plan - Antonis confirmed that.

Year 3 Prem
Year 5 Europe.

How can you progress when you change managers like your socks, and trade players at an obscene rate.

69 players in 3.5 yrs.

We are now looking to move players on that we bought in 4 months ago - how can that be correct ?

Where is the planning ? The whole point of a director of football is that when you change managers it doesn’t affect the overall strategy.

How can you go from Iaonnou being bought in as 1st choice left back, with Ribeiro dumped to the bomb squad, then fast forward 4 months, and Yuri is now first choice and they are trying to move Iaonnou.

Can anybody offer any explanation what sort of long term recruitment Modesto & Vrentzos are undertaking ?

Or are we making agents rich by the number of transactions, and selling young players to line the pockets ?

I honestly don't believe there has ever been any plan or strategy beyond “must get promoted this season”.

Exactly SM. There was no plan. Just because someone said there was a plan it doesn't mean there was one.

I’d like to think that Hughton has put his foot down, clarified his preferred retained list & provided a list of players that he believes is surplus to requirements.

We can’t dispense of them all immediately - but the quicker we embark on his plan the better.

And insisted on a max of 2 players incoming - this is no longer a promotion drive & the quicker we dispose of the legions of deadwood the better.

Something tells me that - regrettably - Hughton is not driving the agenda.

If that is true then it’s time that EM disposed of Vrentzos & Modesto.

I wonder what BC would make of all this.

I dread to think.

So what do we think our strategy should be this window. Most would agree our squad still isn't good enough but also would not like to see us sign loads of players again. Seems like a stalemate there.

Most would like to see us offload a number of players but that's just not going to happen as due to the pandemic players will not be able to get the same.contracts elsewhere. Aside from releasing them there is no way to offload the majority of unwanted players (predominantly from previous windows as opposed to summer, plus Arter and Blackett)

So what's the master plan? A few loans and otherwise stick with what we have? Spend millions that we don't have on youngsters from Peterborough?

Btw, I have no idea haha! I would probably sign Grosicki on loan (if poss), extend knockaert loan (if poss) and then just hope the rest of the team improves. Maybe it'll look better now Grabban is fit, Fred might still turn out to be good maybe. Otherwise leave it at that and if anyone is stupid enough to sign anyone from us that isn't Worrall or Mighten then go ahead!
