Personally I prefer it this way although not sure if its a directive or just refs being inconsistent. What I do know is that back home VAR would get involved and give everyone a 6 minute delay while they dithered and then decided to give a penalty or not based on the players badge.

Off topic someone asked me last night if I liked VAR, I said I hate it. I’ve reflected on that and tried to define my hatred. Imagine VAR is a person and that person combines the worst aspects of Gary Megson, Richard Keogh and Chris Commons rolled into one. Yes I hate it far more than that.

Give me a choice that we bin off VAR but instead we have hydration breaks in the PL in January, have the game officially renamed soccerball and Neville commentating on Forest games for all eternity then Im off to buy some Powerade.

Was it offside? I have no idea. We haven’t seen a proper replay or freeze frame. No semi automated images whether you believe they are accurate or not. Whats the point of it if they don’t show proof? If they dont show proof then why not unless there’s something fishy going on.

It certainly looked it and they were shown the VAR view in the stadium apparently.

Really? If it was that obvious why did it take about 2 mins? VAR is an invention basically to please a TV audience, it certainly doesn’t please anyone in the stadium. So we just take their word for it with no evidence. Again whats the point?

Only way to do it for the live audience is to rugby-fy it which i think is where we are heading.

Ref mic'd up, TMO mic'd up and images on the big screen so everyone sees whats being shown/discussed. 

I'd also like to see the same 'any reason i cant give the goal (try)' test coming in where if nothing conclusive in 2 mins, on field decision stands. same as cricket iirc?

I've been enjoying the fact the refs are not giving fouls just because there is contact. Makes the game flow much better, and great not seeing players rolling around on the floor trying to con the ref

Watching a tournament like this world cup contrasts so much with what the premier league has become. No (or not much) players taking every opportunity to go down, no (or not many) players rolling around on the floor trying to get their opponent sent off, 11 man wrestling matches at corners, yellow cards for every foul committed and VAR taking forever to check goals & offsides. The premier league should take a look to see how it can be done much better.
