Which shows just how good a job Forest's Academy with Gary Brazil has been doing with its conveyor belt of talent.

Chris has, in a select way, brought youth into the side. Garner. Pivotal role. Our own Academy players like Yates (again, pivotal role) and Mighten (who has now got a couple of key goals for Forest, the latter at Blackburn.)

Even our CH pairing are relatively young. Though now battle experienced.

As always it's about getting that blend right. Only 2(?) losses in 13 says that Hughton must be close to getting that alchemy right.

People have kept asking what the club's philosophy is. But it's apparent from the current blend, that a mixture of experience and youth. A cosmopolitan (domestic and abroad) squad balance of Academy and external recruitment. Latterly showing a clear focus in January on targeted quality. (ie. Players who had clearly done it at Champ' level aka Murry, Krov', Knock' and Garner who was playing for a top 6 Watford side.)

We'll need Summer to see more of a pattern established. (Perhaps the key flaw last Summer was that several of the key acquisitions hadn't played in a while. But players like Knockheart have proved their worth and Colback is on his way back to the player we know. And it's now clear why Freeman struggled.)

Rotherham United welcome Nottingham Forest to the New York Stadium on Tuesday night when Matthew Donohue from Greater Manchester has the whistle.

A teacher by trade Matt began his career as an official at the tender age of fourteen getting promoted to the EFL List of Assistants in 2014 operating there for two seasons before hanging up the flag and concentr9ating on refereeing in 2016. Matt got promotion to the National List of Referees prior to the 2018/19 season.

This will be the fourth time Matt has been in the middle for a Millers game the last one, in January, seeing six goals when Stoke City were the visitors to the New York Stadium. An own goal from Angus MacDonald gave the visitors a fourteen minute lead with Matt Crooks equalising just after the half hour mark. Michael Smith put the hosts in front six minutes into the second half only for Danny Batth to get a Potters equaliser with Crooks making it three-two with his second of the game minutes later. But with fifteen minutes to go Stoke equalised again this time from Nick Powell. Crooks and Matt Olosunde saw yellow on that Tuesday evening.

Matt was also in charge of our game in November when Rotherham made the trip to Wales to take on Swansea City. A goal from Matt Grimes on the twenty-eighth minute was enough to give the hosts all three points. He also been in charge of our away game at Reading the month earlier which was a three-nil win for the Royals.

In the twenty games he has been in the middle this season Matt has shown fifty-two yellow cards and four red cards.

Running the line on Tuesday night we have Paul Hodskinson and Mark Dwyer with the Fourth Official being David Webb.

After two relatively good away performances against two topend teams culminating in narrow defeats....on that premise this game might now look like one that we can win ,but thats when football generally kicks you in the teeth..

For me the way things stand this is our biggest game of the season this is a must not lose again.

Rotherham Fans Comments 1st Half....

At the start of the season there was always one player in a team that looked head and shoulders above the players that we have. Notts Forest's, for me was Christie at right back. He just looked classy and now someone will show me where he screwed up
It is the case though that each and every club has players that shine above the rest of the team. Last wednesday was the same, not so much in football skill on the night by the way they cheated, feigned injury and theatrically dived to con the officials. We didn't get what we deserved from the game!
Saturday gone they could play! They deserved to win and I have no complaints although we could have nicked a goal and brought back a point to cheer us all up!

I have seen people writing that they would be happier us playing in League One than us playing in the Championship. The critisism folk get when they write those sorts of things bemuses me. I get where they are coming from, I get that they'd prefer to see us win more matches than we lose and I get the thrill of promotion. The Championship is the right league for us to be in but it is going to be another couple of years before we have a squad of players that are all capable of playing in it.

Do you remember the 4 wingers that thought that they'd be better off looking for another club thinking that they'd be higher up in the leagues than us? Where are they? There is only 1 player that is playing higher up now than what he was when he was with us. I struggle to think of another that could copy him at this stage and play in the Prem but there are others that could easily play higher up in the table than we languish.

We need 20+ players in the squad good enough week in week out to play int Championship and we don't have them yet.

Tonight is a night when everyonz of those players play well and play to beat these! We can do it! We can survive but we have to win these games against the bottom clubs!

First 15 minutes key for me tonight. Set the tone, get about, make a statement to Forest (within the rules of the game), start with blistering intensity, all the cliches, and maybe their minds will go to Friday when they play Derby, just maybe. First goal super important as they are resilient. UTM!

Wrong set up for me. Wiles clearly needs a rest and Barlaser is definitely not up to his best. Either one of these needs replacing and Sadlier should come in. My choice I know and I don't manage the team, however, I know when our midfield is suddenly looking suspect and not working.

Couldn't agree more about the squad rotation Brin, I do think the flat performance against Norwich was a combination of playing against the best team in the league, and also having played in the late kick off game last wednesday at Bournemouth , and having less time to recover, is it a coincidence that Bournemouth also lost last saturday?
A big game for us, as it is for Forest, but they are bang in form of late and a close game is what I'm expecting, but I really would have liked us to have freshened the team up a little so let's hope this works for us, UTM

I was on a few forest forums earlier and it was the usual condescending ill informed claptrap from a lot of them, so a victory would taste all the sweeter, aside from the importance of the 3 points.

Drink wise, bog standard lager at the moment but with a few Buxton brewery IPA'S of varying strengths should I need them ; )

I wouldn’t say midfield is missing but I think when we counter you can see we only tend to do it with three, two of the centre mids sit back

We have shown that we can play football, but tonight we seem to have reverted to hoof it from the back. And when the (few) chances come our way we haven't had the quality. So disappointing.

The passing and crossing have been dire.
Yet Forest have won courtesy of an offside goal and a diabolical miss by Freddie. Crossbar just saved them

On that performance we don't deserve to stop up, total garbage.

Rotherham aftermatch ramblings......

Well the previous two games were frustrating because we lost 1-0 to apparently good sides but this was a different level of frustration because we were essentially rubbish. Another sitter of a chance missed and an effort off the bar but not much else to show for 90 minutes where in all honesty they seemed to panic whenever we got near their goal. Add to that an offsite goal and it doesn't make for a very good night for RUFC fans.

Absolute sh1te. Played like a league 1 side and that’s where we are heading.

Offside goal..But that was a relegation performance, it’s as bad as we have played, very hard to watch and be positive.

If we play like that we are down by a mile

The football we played tonight wouldn't have got a result in League 2.
Yes their goal was offside, yes Freddie should have scored and yes we hit the bar but let's be honest we were absolutely dreadful and deserved what we got.

Not a great performance but I would have still been happy had their goal been disallowed and Freddy had converted a dream chance.
4 defeats on the trot will be hard to recover from. Not that impressed with Forest tbh but our passing and crossing was as bad as I've seen.

In the mire, time to get some tactics into the Millers plan of survival, after tonights performance, was garbage, which we looked a even bet for relegation.
Time for Warne to have a rethink on the way forward, otherwise we will lose championship status.

Regarding Sky, the majority of those watching would have turned it off.

I made my commments before the game started and most came true ? No left footed player, no squad rotation ! Players looked tired ? We have not helped ourselves at all ! We need to vary the formation far to predictable ?

Our goalie man of the match for the last five games ? What does that tell you ?

More than anything I hope the players don't feel how I do right now. The cloud of destiny with us not being able to survive in this league is overhead and it looks like it will pour down soon.

So much to say but I think tonight has shown me that 1-11 we have a team that by and large can hold it's own in a game. Generally in them and rarely get swept aside in this division. We look to our bench, with a heart full of hope and a head full of realism, we just don't have players to come on that can have meaningful impacts. Minus Giles. Definitely a top 3 issue as to why we will be on the brink of relegation in this league. Anyone's fault? Maybe in part but that's where the budgets tell more than other areas in this division. Especially with a hectic schedule, we have to keep trotting out the same lineup because we can't change it.

The Ladapo miss is what we would all do in that situation, a tier 2 player shouldn't, cannot miss a chance like that.

Lino for their goal, doesn't help when you have to beat consistently awful decisions as well as opponents that are tough enough...

Although their goal was offside I thought we were poor. Especially attacking. Very lacklustre. Played as though we would have been happy with a 0-0. Very slow as well.

Abysmal! What's point in having good midfield players if we just gonna bypass them all the time

Complete shambles from the off, they played the long ball better than us. Our back 3 looked desparate all night. We need to get a new plan and back up to steam quickly. Good job Brum are as bad.

Freddie played like Derby had already signed him. You don't see many Championship strikers having a fresh air kick, so he is unique i suppose.

The problem is we have very little quality cover.we would have beaten forest a couple of weeks back. We need to rest up players now for the reading game. We badly miss lyndsay and his injury could very well finish us off.

If the rest of the team had played as well as viktor we wunt have lost.

After the game Paul Warne said he thought the players looked jaded. This is an excuse used all to often in football, usually by teams that are losing. In my opinion we had a negative mindset from the off and ended up preforming poorly, especially in midfield. Again this is just my opinion, it’s their mindset that’s jaded not their bodies.UTM

Despite 4 defeats on the bounce we have 2 games in hand on Birmingham outside the bottom 3, 2 points to make up. Many would of taken that at the start of the season at this stage, have a fighting chance, and we do! I'm leaving this thoroughly disheartening night on a positive note, for me, for anyone else who wants something to keep the faith. We can do this guys, we just need others to keep being rubbish also and us not quite so bad

The manager’s post match thoughts

"It was a little bit disappointing. The best team won. We just looked jaded really. With hindsight, I should have changed the team more.

"We didn't have loads of options where our energy is in the middle of the pitch. I can't criticise the lads because they have been amazing. They just had a little bit more guile than us.

"I thought they played us really well. I just felt we weren't winning enough first contacts and that their set-pieces were more deadly than ours. They just had more stardust than us."

1 huge difference that we seem to see now is that CH has got us in a position where we can spoil other teams set up/style and make them play poorly.

We may not quite have the free-flowing attractive football we might want (yet?) but if we can out 'ugly' sides into draws and wins we are going to be a nightmare of other sides. I hope that translates to the better teams too although it is nice that we pick up points at 'lower' teams whereas they were where we used to drop points.
