Thanks for the match reports, Silenzi and BadDog!
Plenty of detail and commentary. Top job. SA. One question, I've been curious as to how Watson and Bridcutt have performed vs Geddy and Yates. Yates is getting positive reviews. Sounds like Geddy and Yates improved Forest yesterday in that area. ...and Colback yet to be integrated. How is the DCM area shaping up..? SA.

Getting a little worried about central midfield after the reviews yesterday. I thought Watson was past it last season personally and never got the hype around Colback. Guedioura always looked average although didn’t get loads of chances in 4231. Liked Bridcutt to an extent. Just throw Yates straight in! Wouldn’t surprise me if we see Osborn there or cash possibly

Seems a lot of work needs to be done on the team, best 11 and the fitness and form. My only worry is they now only have two friendlies left.
I’ve said all along we didn’t have enough games this pre season, especially with so many new players (and hopefully a few more to come)

Could the midfield two be ...Yates nd Colback?...I dont think giving Watson the armband was a good idea ...as this might tie AKs hand a wee bit when it comes to leave him out..from the above reports in him slowing down things it reminds me of last year...he used to do it too...maybe in a team struggling it seemed a good thing nd a calming excersise but now we r a team that should be on the up nd pushing the opposition nd not giving them time to regroup...or we will lose the strenght of the portugese kids nd Soudani..

Yates and Colback. I was beginning to think that myself... ;) When Geddy and Yates come on for the 2nd half (or the games they've played in together so far, and it is distinct vs Watson and Bridcutt) the team seem to tick with a higher tempo and perform better or am I just imagining things? I saw the 2nd half stream, and of course, the Portuguese transformed the team quality wise, it was like Forest had gone into Warp drive and bam, they've equalised after some dizzying pressure. It was transformative. All of a sudden, Oldham couldn't live with Forest. Another ten minutes of that and Oldham would have cracked. But, the team dynamic seems to go up a gear when Yates is in the side? In the games so far, who has performed better? Watson and Liam? Or Geddy and Yates? (As for Lam, I caught that ((from the Match thread...)) he'd come on for Worrall who'd seemed to have had a decent 45 mins. I had wondered how Worrall and Dawson would do as a combination. They didn't concede. It was Lam who came on, and before we knew it, 1-1, then 2-1 Oldham. I suspected that Lam might be the weak link and one of the match reports seem to think the goals had come from his side and he couldn't handle the physical side of things. Lam has been given another chance. Has he seized it? I'm sure it (DCM) will be Watson and Colback. There's bags of experience in that combination. ...and Leadership. The team don't seem fully fit yet and maybe Watson will look better with Colback alongside him and the Portuguese lads doing more of the work in front of them by 'defending' through attacking. Watson added (along with Colback) more quality, resolve and character to the team last year in terms of being more robust, talking to the team, the ref' and game management. That will be invaluable in the season ahead. And while Watson, Geddy and Dawson don't have the legs of their youth...(that's what the Portuguese lads, the Academy Products and other younger signings are for...) they bring buckets of experience and game know how that will knit the team together. I think, too, we haven't seen Colback in the side yet in the pre-season games. He and Watson seemed to work well as a combo. Complimentary though similar in some ways...and they made Forest tick. Colback, like a 'John McGovern' type..? Seemed to make Forest tick when he played and seemed to smooth the rough edges off Watson. (Even Geddy, with younger legs struggled, on occasion, with the DCM position vs Watford under Billy. A position he normally did decent with.) Colback seems to bring a 'steady eddy' quality to DCM. I think we'll learn more from Scunthorpe and vs Bournemouth as well as Karanka closes in on team fitness and his starting 11. SA.

Sorry, I completely forgot about Gueddy in my match report! Did well enough when he came on. 7/10 performance. We were definitely better yesterday with Yates & Gueddy, but was that because they had the Portuguese 3 to hit? Their counter attacking & running murdered Oldham late-on. But the midfielders saw them & got them the ball (& got up to support too). On that showing Watson would’ve been going in circles & then losing the ball, or passing back, instead of hitting them early for the quick counter. Would like to see yates & gueddy start a game against better opponents.
Widdow is right, there aren’t enough games to work out best 11 & give all players a chance to gel as well as get fitness. After pre-season I really hope Watson isn’t auto 1st choice. Very optimistic about Yates this season & for once we’re not going to be asking too much of a youngster (a la Brereton last season) because he’ll have Colback, Bridcutt & Gueddy with him or as replacements who are all competent at least. Watch Yates get sent on loan now! I know others disagree, but as far back as I can remember watching (Frank Clark for actually going to games) our pre-season has been a good barometer for the season. Our promotion seasons were preceded by good results in pre-season (beating top flight teams, sweeping aside lower league opposition). We struggled against lower league teams in relegation seasons. This has not been a super pre-season so far - far from the disastrous ones where you knew we’d strugggle, but not great. Based on pre-season I’d say top 10 finish, where in the top 10 will depend on how quickly Karanka works out his best team & how long they take to ge (and if Karanka gets time to sort it out if we’re mid table at Christmas!). Anyway, I’m NW based so won’t get to any more pre-season & I’m having an op on my leg just before season starts, so I won’t get to any of the tempting NW away games in 1st few mths, so I look forward to reading match reports from others.

So I'm expecting a bit of a slow start (very much like that first BD season) and won't expect the team to fully click until around mid September.

Would like to see yates & gueddy start a game against better opponents. Thank you for your comments on Geddy and additional comments on Yates and the midfield. Thought provoking. More and more, I hope Yates doesn't leave on loan. He seems to add a different dynamic. Do Forest actually have another DCM/CM like him? He seems very quick, dynamic and progressive...and good positional sense even pointing out where more experienced players should be. (A young Chris Cohen or Geddy with younger legs?) He seems vocal too. Interesting viewpoint on pre-seasons being barometers for the forthcoming seasons. Forest seem to have bags of goals in them. But the games so far seem to show different characters depending on who is playing in the team. At times, Forest seem to take time to settle, other times an early goal, other times hardworking but suddenly spring to life as and when the personnel changes. Forest, are basically trying two different teams out at times. And Oldham, it seemed more like staggered blend of trying out different players. But when the Portuguese and others came on, it seemed to make a vast difference. I couldn't tell who was who that well on the stream but you could tell the Portuguese lads made a vast difference and Grabban finished as cool as a cucumber. (I remember Forest playing Chesterfield at the City Ground back when Darchvelle was in the team. He was quick! But I remember thinking that Forest didn't cope with the long ball too well that day. Chesterfield would just kick it long and over...and Forest struggled to get back defensively each time. Forest lost that one 4-3 was it? My point being, Oldham were more physical muck and nettles side that they will face in English games. Though they did face that in one of their Spanish games were the team were fouling them a lot...and they seemed to stand up to it pretty well over there.) I think the next two games will tell us more. SA. (22-07-2018, 09:45 AM)Plymouth red Wrote:(22-07-2018, 09:35 AM)Silenzi Wrote: Sorry, I completely forgot about Gueddy in my match report! I think by the looks of things honestly Watson is on the way out his legs are going and like Silenzi said I didn't think he was all that last season.
Currently for me Colback & Gueddy or Yates would be better options. We need another DM with legs otherwise good sides will dominate our midfield, Ozzie isn't the answer in that position.
COYR!
