Should we give Ribeiro a new contract for 3 years because of that?
We need to be thinking long term.
We had a S**t team last year and Ribeiro played a big part in that. We need better than Ribeiro if we want to be a better team and we will get it if we are patient.
But is the club prepared to pay for better than him?

Not sure it was our decision on Ribs anyway?
Think you are being a tad harsh on his capabilities though. Last season he was in and out of a massively struggling team. As Left backs go, he has certainly been one of our better ones in recent years-not saying much I know. Although very young, not sure Buchanan is much better, especially defensively at this point in time.
I'd have Ribs back in a heart beat at present.

The bids that have gone in for Buchanan suggest that they are yes.

He's gone and he was for the most part S**t so can we all get over it.
A new left back will be signing soon enough.
Was he better than the left back that wore the shirt on Saturday Sniff?
I have said before look at the stats for all 4 left backs we used last season. Bong actually was the highest. In terms of defensive contribution Ribeiro was worst by some margin.
Maybe 'Squad Member Bong' had good stats last year. I agree he's not the disaster zone fans make him out to be. But we've got 'Bomb Squad Bong' playing at the moment who looks broken having been dragged back off the scrap heap. Had we extended Ribs he could have been pushed back to the bench when a better option came along but at the moment he'd be putting in perfectly adequate performances.

i think Gabriel is great, against Blackburn he had plenty of the ball, worked hard, tough, strong, good engine
alot to learn, but the whole squad has to be fair
the differance between the Blackburn and Stoke games was stratospheric, we took a huge step backwards, the differance for me was that v Blackburn the players seemed to at least believe and made a few things happen, against Stoke i don't think anyone really wanted to receive the ball, light and day
Gabriel has alot to learn but could become a mainstay, maybe captain even, it's a shame he aint got a really good role model to learn from, this is a problem throughout the squad, we need leaders, role models, players who want, demand the ball, the inertia between the Blackburn and stoke games was startling

Perhaps then the error was bomb squadding Bong early, could've used him more in pre-season and he might've been more confident. Who knows a few good performances migth've tricked someone into offering him a contract! Bomb squad strategy doesn't exactly make players appealing to other clubs.

Good post on young Gabriel.
I thought Gabriel did better at LB than he did at RB, to be fair. I thought he had a decent game before the sending off (which was a bit unlucky/clumsy, hardly malicious.)

Being told you're not wanted (scrap heap) and then told, er...we have no LBs...so can you come back and do a job. Who knows how he feels about that. I think Bong has done 'ok' considering that. If we'd had an actual LB, Bong could have easily been sat on the bench to come on for the last 15 mins or cover an injury.
The club is moving to a younger recruitment model as we know...but it's not been a smooth transition?

The word 'transition' seems to have become part of the clubs vocabulary over the weekend thanks to CH. We're in transition from one recruitment model to another. It looks to me like we're in transition the way someone would be if they were falling from a cliff edge.

The only transition we are in is that we have gone from making proper offers to players and getting deals over the line to making derisory offers and not being able to get deals over the line.
I realise I will get stick for that but feel free to fire away because that is exactly what is happening.

Unfortunately we got too many bad deals over the line which is now impacting on what we can afford this time. The disaster of the Arter deal is looking like one of the worst we have ever done if the rumours about the transfer fee and wages are correct. We cannot afford another one of them.
