Why don’t we ever sight our sights higher than managers who are just out of work?

Why not pony up to try to get someone out of their contract? Surely it would be cheaper than some of the signings we make who don’t play or go out on loan.

Wish we’d gone for Glasner or Silva. Might have been hard, but they’d have been worth a shot.

Iriola would have been my pick - it would have been tough before, but now they’re 5th and we’re 5th bottom. So we might have fancied him, but he’s out of our grasp.

Hope Ange gets a win on Thursday. I’ve heard everyone is on board with him - but we can’t win.

Feels like when McLeish came in and we all knew it wouldn’t last. I just fear who could be next at this rate.

Iraola and Glasner were/are out of our league right now. If they leave their teams it would be to someone better. 

Silva seems to have been overlooked for bigger jobs in the last few years so maybe he was/is more attainable but again he may not want to leave mid season and may also set his sights higher.

Who were they working for when we got them?

Steve worked - we were bottom of the championship when we got him. 

Nuno worked - we were looking like being relegated when he took over with a points deduction imminent. 

But before Steve Cooper went, we were after unemployed Benitez. Then later when Cooper did go, we got Nuno - who was available. He was brilliant for us, but he was free to get. 

When we knew Nuno was off, we knew we’d get Ange. Pretty sure he was available too. 

Rob Dorsett said we liked Silva, Glasner and Iriola, but we all knew we’d never get any of them and we’d get Ange. 

But this time we weren’t bottom of the championship, or bottom 3 of the prem facing a points deduction, we were in our best place in 30 years. About to play in Europe with what looked like a great squad. A position of strength we might not get again for a while if this goes wrong. 

All I asked was, why we never seem to go for managers who have jobs but might be a better fit. 

It’s a genuine question. It might not be possible. I just wondered why we always get managers who don’t have jobs.

Sorry - you asked a question so thought you might expect an answer. All I meant was that some out of contract managers work, for whatever reason. And sure, some don’t. 

But thinking we can go out and get highly rated managers currently contracted to other clubs is a little unrealistic in my opinion. At the same time, who says we haven’t sounded out these people and got tuned down? We know nothing about what goes on behind the scenes.

I agree, those 2 are out of our league now. And their next jobs will be above us.

But we finished above both of them and all I was wondering was about how aggressively we can peruse players, break transfer records for them, yet never do similar with managers/head coaches.

I’m guessing it’s because we know we don’t stand a chance, or we’ve asked and been told “no, thank you”, I just wondered is all.

I did ask a question, so that’s fair. 

I loved Steve. And I loved Nuno. 

But all I was trying to say was that every time we need a new manager, they’re always free to join.

I've said it in another thread, the same people wanting Iraola and Glasner would have been calling them clueless and wanting them sacked after they both went winless for 9 and 10 games respectively.

Well if he wasnt made to pass in triangles and play completely different to what made us sign him then he would probably be doing grand. Also a new league and players need time to adapt

I would imagine that the thinking behind Dyche is that he would hopefully come in and hit the ground running (if he comes in).

I believe he lives in those apartments next to the ground and he probably goes to most of our home games.

So he knows the team/squad and obviously he knows the club and the city etc.

He also did a very good job at Burnley to be fair to him and he fought the flames at Everton.

Plus his strengths in defending are currently our biggest weakness. If he's happy to accept a contract until the season it does seem a sensible fit and hopefully would secure our safety in teh Prem this year.

Got to say, I'm warming to the idea of Dyche. I really don't think he's that far away from Nuno. He'll love our CB's. He knows what Wood's all about, and he'll like the wingers we've got who can give him the service. We've demonstrated under Ange we have some real quality and squad depth now attacking wise, Dyche would come in and add organisation.

We'd be derided for the appointment by the football world but I'm pretty sure the media glare would disappear as we get our act together and begin to get a few results. We need a relatively consolidatory season where everything settles down and we get our shit together.
