Conceding Soft Goals

It is so much better now. The defence overall has been excellent this season so far. Milenkovic made a massive difference and we have a settled couple of CB's unlike last season when Murillo seemed to have a different partner almost every game.

Im going to bump this again, closest we have but it’s obviously set pieces in the main.

Only just watched yesterday back but 2 corners they score from Casemiro gets an unchallenged back post header in. Sorry but how the hell can that happen? Its not like he is a giant and he’s not the most athletic either but he is out jumping all of our defenders. Its not good enough. The organisation we had last year seems to have disappeared, the zonal marking is letting players sitting deep at the far post go unchallenged. Think this was an issue last year too but maybe we got away with it more.

The second issue is Sels. Coming out for crosses is not his thing but he is far too passive for my liking and gets easily blocked by opponents. UN put on the match thread he hasn’t collected any of the last 19 corners. Im suspect his stats weren’t that different last season but we simply dealt with the ball better. Seems to flap at shots too, Doesn’t look at all confident right now.

I guess the answer will be Dyche will sort it but some different approach needs to happen. We need to score at least twice to get a point right now.

As a former Goalkeeper (I can hear you laughing) I was always encouraged to at least get a punch on the ball if it can't be caught when it comes across the six yard box.

Sels is not even doing that.

He attempted one punch yesterday and made a complete mess of it.

Would like to see us go back to the older days at corners - leave 2 men upfield and put a player on each post.

OK Ive stopped sniggering.

But yes I agree, Lammens (also Belgian and looks better) showed how to do it yesterday, clear confident punching away from a corner.

I don’t like dropping keepers it sets the wrong message and doesn’t help confidence overall but John vs Graz isn’t the worst idea.

If I remember right, even last season we were undone in same manner. I seem to recall Everton pin pointed going long at corners to get first contact, often free header. It started to become a pattern after that when teams got onto it.

The reason we don’t do this, although admittedly doesn’t address the problem, is explained here.
