That said I think Lingard looked good off the bench vs Fulham, I hope we play a formation that allows him a free role.

That said I think Lingard looked good off the bench vs Fulham, I hope we play a formation that allows him a free role.

Wassy, your defence of Brennan is admirable mate but I'd suggest we've seen (patches of) form and influence from MGW, Awoniyi and Lingard to suggest that they should all be included ahead of Brennan who hasn't. IIRC, he's has had no effect on any of the games so far except him scoring a goal at Everton and him sticking a penalty away v Bournemouth. Both good goals at the time but apart from those two shots at goal his impact on games has been minimal, maybe non existent. Last season his very presence on the pitch was a weapon for us as teams were worried about his pace. This season that's less of a factor and against faster, technically better defenders Brennan is just another player. In fact he's a player who lacks an all round ability to influence a game.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not writing him off but I don't see how his performances so far this season get him picked ahead of the others. It's perhaps not his fault as the side isn't playing to his strength but we are where we are.

I'm sorry that's just not what I have seen. Awoniyi in particular, what has he offered? He scored twice but both you've discounted that from Brennan. So what else is he offering? A poor touch, weak hold up play, largely outmuscled by strikers and missed some great chances. 

MGW, this one equally grates on me, a few flair touches does not make him influential. I think he looks class and I really want him to develop with us however in our current situation he's offered no end product as of yet. 

Lingard, great CV clearly not offered loads so far. I would stick with him due to his pedigree but lets not pretend he's done more than any other attackers.

We're debating the merits of a bad bunch so far but re Awoniyi, my view is he is affecting games like Brennan isn't. His first game v West Ham showed what he might become for us, a physical presence who is a nuisance to defenders and who, crucially, has the ability to stick chances away too. Sure, Brennan can score goals too but that's his only attribute (at present), he's offering absolutely nothing else. Against Man City we instantly looked better with Awoniyi on the pitch. We can play out long to him with a modicum of success. It was a small crumb of comfort in a hugely disappointing night. Brennan just doesn't offer that kind of outlet. Re Lingard, I thought it was time for him to be dropped last time but felt he did well when coming on off the bench. But I've got to admit he's been a big disappointment so far and I'm now doubting if he's going to end the season with us. If another club offer to take over his contract in January I think the club might accept that.  MGW, the jury's out for me. He's clearly got talent and quality on the ball but we've not seen much from him. But again, in contrast to Brennan, I feel he can affect a game and is involved more.  And we saw last season he has it in his locker to play centrally as a forward and be effective.

So my thoughts for Monday's game is the priority is to stop the rot, play deep, keep a clean sheet and see where that takes us. In my eyes that means not starting Brennan and maybe playing the extra man in midfield. Brennan's going to be a big part of our season but needs must at the moment.
