Developing Our Squad For Season 2021/22
#25
If he comes back we'd still have 3 senior left backs though (assuming Ribs is off). Unless we count Blackett as Dawson's replacement as 4th reserve CB.

As things stand at the end of the season when our loan players have gone back and some others contracts expire we will be left with the following realistic first team squad player's for next season (I have not included Swan, McGuane, Richardson and Fornah etc). This is off the top of my head so forgive me if I have missed someone.

Samba
Smith

Jenkinson
Gabriel

Worrall
Mckenna
Soh
Figs

Blackett
Bong
Ioannou

Colback
Yates
Cafu
Arter
Bachirou

Carvalho
Johnson

Lolley
Mighten

Grabben
Taylor
Da Costa

Looking at that list the full backs definitely need upgrading. We are 2 wide players short and I'd say we need more quality at DCM and in the striking department. I am happy with our Goalkeeper's and Central Defender's.

Lots of work to be done then.

Over to you CH, GB and FM.

23 players on that list, 4 of whom are 21 or under so do not count towards the 25 man squad count.

Da Costa and Bouchirou will surely be on their bikes; Ioannou will make his loan move permanent and Almeria still have a chance of going up albeit through the play offs; whether Carvalho ends up there is anyone's guess.

I would imagine Hughton will want rid of Jenkinson and Arter.

If we fall lucky that reduces the first team squad to 13.

I would have thought that we will sign Christie and Krovinovic; surely we are well down the road as far as those negotiations go.

Ameobi will probably get another year, we have nothing to lose in offering him another deal.

That will leave us looking at recruiting somewhere in the region of another 6 to 8 players

A lot of work to do this Summer with another overhaul of playing staff.

2 fullbacks.  2 wingers.  Ball playing DCM.  2 Strikers.  A keeper to push Samba.  ????????

SA.

A keeper to replace Samba would do me; he has long been a liability.

You won’t get a better keeper than samba in this league not a chance he needs to stay 100%
Come on you mighty Reds

I think Hughton will bring in another keeper to push Samba.  Or better.  There's not sufficient competition in that area.  It's not the only area that needs pushing.  Fullbacks.  DCM (be surprised if Garner comes back.).  ACM.  (Krov' isn't ours and may not come back.). Wingers.  Strikers.  Obviously with the latter two.

That Smith hasn't overhauled Samba isn't a vindication of Samba.  He's decent enough.  Done 'ok.'  But he has cost points.  He does have flaws in his game and has cost Forest points this season.  The 'he should have saved that' have added up.

SA.

I’d be surprised if Ameobi stays- told he has a ‘Taylor’ injury- one which protects his next contract elsewhere...

Perfectly understandable. Put yourself in his shoes, most would do it. I just hope we're currently negotiating with him.

Its a shame if he goes. Weve really missed him of late. He'd be in my side every week.

Given we're essentially safe now there's no reason for him to play so fine by me (if true)

Yeah a quality squad player, offers something different and not going to be on big wages. Will be a nice complement to Johnson and Mighten next season

Britt is available on a free in the summer. Forget his likely sky high wage demands for a moment, would CH take him?

Ashley Fletcher also available on a free??

Daft decision if we let Ameobi go. Value for money he trounces either Knockaert or Freeman, no fee and simply extending a modest contract. We would struggle to get anyone as effective for a similar outlay.
Would understand if he wants to leave to be a more regular start but would think that would be at a lower level.

Until recently I would have said a firm no to either. But given all our 3 strikers need to leave in my opinion we need to be realistic. We can probably gamble big bucks on one new face (probably at the expense of losing another from the academy). Another can be an upcoming loan from PL, and unlike Rafa Mir hope they come good with us not after they leave. A third probably needs to be a punt on a freebie like Fletcher.

Yep, I couldnt understand why 1 he was only offered another one year deal and 2 why he accepted a one year deal. His season under Sabri more than merited a decent contract imo.

Hes played the last two seasons at risk. Its understandable he'd want some security. Considering the money that been spent on Knockaert, Taylor, Arter wages, he's a no brainer for me.

The trouble with taking young loan strikers is that they need game time to get established and comfortable and unless they are shit-hot they're unlikely to be an automatic first choice pick like Garner has been.
