Cooper will also know there will be in the region of 3,000 Trickies at Selhurst Park and will not want to put out a weak side and run the risk of disappointing them. He says he owes our fans so much for the support we have given him and the side, he wont want to repay them with a team of dross or risk getting a beating.
He will want to win! Therefore, I think he will field a very strong starting 11 and maybe introduce one or two fringe players towards the end of the game, depending on how things are going.
If Cooper's job is that insecure, winning at CP in a match that is meaningless to CP isn't going to save it. If the owner suspects that Cooper will waste this free opportunity to evaluate the bubble talent, he should dictate the lineup to Cooper.
The fans want to win every game, but that just isn't the best use of games at this time of year. That's why the fans aren't in charge of the team. The fans probably bought these tickets when they thought this game was going to be critical for Forest. It turns out that it isn't. They should be happy that it isn't.

What are you possibly going to learn from one game away at Palace about squad players that you don't already know?!
Obviously you just play your best team and try and finish as high up as possible. You think EM would prefer to sacrifice a potential 2.5m just to confirm that Dennis is still shit and Toffolo is still a solid backup?

2.5m is nothing to the overall budget of this team.
On the other hand, the opportunity to evaluate players, consequence-free, is extremely rare for a team that had to fight tooth and nail all season to survive. We couldn't even throw fringe players out there in league games that were drubbings, as we couldn't be sure if goal difference would matter to our relegation chances (luckily, it didn't)!
There are MANY players on our roster that require evaluation going into next season. You could probably put 11 of them out there, not just 2!
If doing this helped us make the RIGHT decision about even a single player, the exercise would be worth more to the team than 2.5m.

2.5m may not be excessive to the teams overall budget, but 2.5m is something not to be sneezed at either, nor dismissed out of hand, as you appear to be doing.
That 2.5m could, and I'm not saying it is, but hypothetically could be the difference between meeting FFP or not. If not, then the consequences of failing to meet FFP would be way beyond catastrophic in so many ways.
Besides, I'm pretty sure EM wouldn't be over the moon if we squandered 2.5m as if it was confetti!!
Also, do you not think SC would've used some of these fringe players more often during the season, given the number of injuries we have had to endure if they had been good enough?

We are sure to lose a number of players in the offseason. We certainly need to know who we should try to hang on to.
Of course, during the season, you end up playing some players who are not your first choice due to injuries, but even those players have to be, as you say, "good enough". It can be difficult to know sometimes, just from training, or from their brief appearances in games, which are your better choices (unless you are really talented at evaluating talent, which I don't think is a strength of SC). Cooper needs all the help he can get to make those choices.
Let's not forget that we are not assured of ANY points against CP, even with our best lineup. What a waste it would be to play our best 11 and then lose. At least playing to evaluate guarantees some benefit from the game.

Bit of a shame not to see Colback on the bench. Wouldve been nice for him to at least go over to the away fans at the end and say his farewells!
