More from Millwall...
A tough game in front of the Sky cameras on a Friday night. Let’s hope it doesn’t turn out like the last time we played on. Friday night on TV against Fulham where the clown in goal had one of his poorest games and we lost 3-0. Fortunately he is not with us....or anybody else!......now so hopefully the result will be better. They are a decent side and they are not a top six side for nothing. But, then again, so were Swansea!
We had a lot of walking wounded last week so maybe some have recovered and are set to make a return. GR may have to adapt his starting line up depending who is fit and he will have been watching very carefully at Calmont Road to assess his options.
One certainty is that Bart will wear the gloves. He had little to do last week and could do little about the goal but he does inspire confidence at the back and make us a solid back five. Mahlon has had a new lease of life at RB and there are no more comments on here about the fact that the lad can’t defend. That has never been the case in my book and I expect him to start. The first big fitness issue is about who plays CB. There has been no talk about whether Hutch’s rib issue has settled down so I take that as a negative. The lad has just a bit more about him than Pearce but if he has not trained then he is not available. I expect the CB’s to be unchanged with Cooper partnering Pearce. I also think that there has been less talk about Murray’s inability to defend. He doesn’t have a lot of pace but he can do the job and I expect him to start.
The biggest issues are in midfield and up front. There has been talk that last week we played a 4-3-3 with Smith spearheading the attack. I can see the formation being unchanged but Smith reverting to the bench. Williams and Molumby are a decent partnership in the middle and Ben could join them there. Jed is a live wire and is a real threat going forward. Neither Bradshaw or Bod started last week and I think there could be a change this week with them both starting.
My thoughts are
Bart
Romeo Pearce Cooper Murray
Ben Molumby Williams
Jed Bradshaw Bod
Subs
Steele Brown Fergie Skalak Mahoney AOB Smith
Forest play a 4-2-3-1 usually, with Grabban upfront, so we will have to watch for the ball over the top to utilise his pace against our centre backs. Lolley is also someone to look out for, he likes to shoot from the edge of the area with either foot, so whenever he is around that area we will need to close him down quickly. They like to keep the ball so we have to decide whether to let them have it and then counter with pace or press them early. They don't score many but also don't concede many. I think it will be a low-scoring game.
We have varied formations a lot since Rowett became manager. I can see us either matching Forest for formation so we don't get outnumbered in midfield, or maybe play a variation on that as Silver has posted above in a 4-3-3. As ever, it depends on injuries and who is available. I always feel more confident if Hutch is in defence but he will miss out and Cooper wasn't very good on Saturday. I think it could be:
Bart
Romeo Pearce Cooper Murray
Molumby Williams
Jed Thommo Skalak
Bradshaw
So the clash of the Titans next, Nottingham Forest with the best away record in the league and ourselves with the current best home showing.
It is all in front of Sky with whom we don't do so well, it will be interesting to see how their screening of this fixture affects the crowd size.
Sabri Lamouchi has taken Forest forward this season and they are currently fourth in the league table.
A victory at The Den tomorrow night will move them to within three points of the automatic promotion places.
The Forest head coach has confirmed that Carl Jenkinson, Samba Sow and Yuri Ribeiro will all miss the game.
We still have McCarthy, Leonard, Fielding and Elliot sidelined for tomorrow. Ferguson trained on Monday and he may be able to return to the squad tomorrow night.
I suspect we will line up as we did at Birmingham although we may start with a different striker.
This will be our 70th game against Forest and honours are ours with 26 wins to their 22.
