Let's see how hes doing after xmas before offering a new contract.

I agree.

We could be doing great, sitting at the top of the table but what happens then when struggling teams in the PL start sacking managers? We could lose him to someone else. Also big clubs in France will come knocking if we are flying high.

Why gamble on losing him? If he signs a new contract and we struggle then at least the decision to stick or twist would be in our hands.

He might not want to sign a contract. If we're still doing well at Christmas and the club have suggested they'll back him in the Jan transfer window, he may feel he'll be in a better negotiating position in the summer.
