Who started in January (picking up the toys that were thrown out the pram by the previous incumbent) with a moral sapped squad, a 'role the dice' recruited squad that was flawed, set up to play in a 2 dimensional way that was sussed out by the bottom teams (stop Lolley and Grabban and you stop Forest) and...
...Martin didn't have the '1' and only striker (of note) that Forest recruited last Summer for many of the games and when he was 'fit' to play. And funnily enough, that coincided with the 'bad' run. When available? He wasn't 'fit.' If you're star striker isn't available for selection or fit enough you're not going to score goals or win games. Or pick up the points needed for the play off position from the '5' points out that you highlighted. Drawing won't get you there. Forest needed to recruit better last Summer. With more depth at CH and in the Striker position. They didn't. That is Karanka's legacy. Not Martin's. And he picked up from that.
We, allegedly, tried for Tammy Abraham. Martin did pick up 3 kick ass CHs which was the more perilous position of the two. Strikers are harder to get than CHs, it appears..? I'll credit Martin for fixing one of the two areas.
We can't assess Forest's malaise in isolation. If you do, then 'that' is obfuscation. :P
Martin has made the point that the club hasn't been in the Premier for 20 years. £25 million on players sounds a lot. But it was catchup. It could have been spent a bit better, I feel. And finding Forest out the top 6 backs that up.
This season Forest finished higher than last season. 3 wins off pipping Derby. (Those nearly wins at WBA, Preston and 'that other team' spring to mind. But we weren't in the same league as the Villa side that outclassed Forest twice. They deservedly go up.)
It's what 'could have been' but still progress. This year I expect the top 6. There's a solid base to build on.
SA.
