If the argument was to maximise profits then we probably shouldn't have lost 105m +, not sure how that I'd maximising profits.

Look at it this way, we had a 30m advantage let's say according to the rules on clubs that followed the rules. We then had a choice to either sell Brennan for below market value as a punishment or fail the rules and risk the consequences. We chose the latter and now we have to accept the punishment.
